The Thirty First Sunday of Ordinary Time November 1, 2020
Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York
Dear Friends, I hope everyone enjoyed an extra hour of sleep last night … though many of us probably don’t want to add another hour to 2020! November begins with All Saints and All Souls. We are all called to be holy, to be saints, but we often fall short. All Saints Day reminds us of what we strive to be; All Souls Day reminds us that we need help to get there. A good spiritual exercise for November might be to read up on the lives of the saints. There are plenty of resources online (i.e., https://www.catholic.org/saints/), but you also might consider something like A Story of a Soul – the spiritual autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux, or maybe even
Pope Francis’ latest encyclical, Fratelli Tutti. Don’t forget that this coming Friday is the First Friday of November, so the church will remain open until 5:00 PM for Eucharistic Adoration. In a world that sometimes seems to focus on the “bare minimum,” perhaps we can try to do a little more to improve our relationship with the Lord and to become saints! You may have heard that our school transitioned to remote learning for two weeks. Before the school year began, we set protocols for our school based on guidelines we received from the diocese and from the NYC Department of Health. The goal is to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as quickly as possible. HIPAA laws require us to limit information that we can share publicly regarding those who test positive for COVID-19, but we need to take every precaution to keep our students, staff and faculty safe. We pray for a quick recovery for those who tested positive for COVID-19, and we want to assure everyone that the faculty and staff are doing everything possible to continue our excellent academic program via virtual classes and other online
resources.
Fr. Paul, Fr. Nick and I have been offering a Virtual Lectio Divina on Zoom on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM. Since opportunities to gather in person are limited, we thought that some parishioners might appreciate participating in a little faith sharing and bible study online. We prepare a Power Point with the Gospel reading for the upcoming Sunday, including information to put the reading in context and some questions for reflection. It’s a great way to gain insights from others, and also helps us to be more attentive to the gospel when we participate at Mass on Sunday. The session goes for a little less than an hour, and there is certainly room for more participants! You can send an email to adultformation@stlukewhitestone.org so we can send
you a link to the meeting.
In these difficult times, I know that parish life at St. Luke is not what it usually is. Only a few groups have begun to meet, and I’m glad that some parishioners can benefit from praying with one another and supporting one another. Choir rehearsals, senior citizens meetings, sports, scouting, and other facets of parish life simply cannot return yet, and I regret that our facilities cannot be used to promote and encourage community life. I also know that some are struggling to support their families, which obviously impacts the ability of some parishioners to support the parish. Through it all, we all have to maintain our hope and trust in God to carry us through. I am truly grateful to everyone who is making an effort to be stewards of time, talent and treasure here at St. Luke despite these unprecedented times. May God bless you always.
Love and prayers, Fr. John

Mass Friday, November 13 at 7:00pm
Immortal God, holy Lord, Father and Protector of all You have created, we raise our hearts to You today for those who have passed out of this mortal life. In Your loving mercy, Father of all, be pleased to receive them in Your heavenly company, and forgive the failings and faults they may have done from human frailty. Your only Son, Christ, our Savior, suffered so cruelly that He might deliver them from the second death. By his merits may they share in the glory of His victory over sin and death. For all the faithful who have died we pray, but in particular for those dear to us, parents, relatives and friends. nor do we forget all who did good to us while on earth, who helped us by their prayers, sacrifice and example. We pray also for any who may have done us harm, and stand in special need of Your forgiveness. May the merits and prayers of our Virgin Mother, Mary, and those of all the Angels and Saints, speak for us and assist them now. This we ask in Christ's name. Amen.

Parish Goal: $ 105, 552 As of 10/26/2020 Number of Pledges: 229 Pledged: $ 77,586 Received: $ 71,490
WE ARE THE CHURCH, TOGETHER In Brooklyn & Queens Thank you to all the parishioners who have already made a gift/pledge to the ACA 2020. Your generous response assists both the many ministries of the diocese and if we go over our goal the funds received come back to the parish. Please make your gift to the ACA now. As always, working together, each gift will help us reach our goal. Please consider a gift today!
Today we renew the hope in eternal life, truly founded on Christ's death and Resurrection. "I am risen and I am with you always", the Lord tells us, and my hand supports you. Wherever you may fall, you will fall into my hands and I will be there even to the gates of death. Where no one can accompany you any longer and where you can take nothing with you, there I will wait for you to transform for you the darkness into light. Christian hope, however, is not solely individual, it is also always a hope for others. Our lives are profoundly linked, one to the other, and the good and the bad that each of us does always effects others too. Hence, the prayer of a pilgrim soul in the world can help another soul that is being purified after death. This is why the Church invites us today to pray for our beloved deceased and to pause at their tombs in the cemeteries. Mary, Star of Hope, renders our faith in eternal life stronger and more authentic, and supports our prayer of suffrage for our deceased brethren.
From a reflection on All Soul’s Day by Pope Benedict XVI, November 2, 2008

PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR NOVEMBER
UPDATED GUIDELINES
On October 23, the Vatican announced an extension of the plenary indulgences which are normally granted from November 1-8, during the octave of the All Souls Day commemoration. Given the many restrictions in place on account of the virus, the Apostolic Penitentiary has decreed that the plenary indulgence be available for the entire month of November. According to the Catechism, an “indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven…” (CCC 1471). In other words, while a soul in a state of grace has been saved from eternal punishment by the forgiveness of sins, a temporal punishment remains as the residue of sin. This temporal punishment can be completely remitted by a plenary indulgence. During the month of November, the Church commemorates the faithful departed, and encourages us to offer prayers and devotions to assist these souls in their journey to heaven. The Vatican decree states that a plenary indulgence may be obtained for the faithful departed throughout the month of November in the following ways:
By visiting a cemetery and praying for the faithful departed By visiting a church and praying the Our Father and the Creed For those who are unable to travel, these prayers may be said at
home before an image of Jesus and/or the Blessed Virgin Mary For the completion of the indulgence, the usual conditions of sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion (both of which must be within a week of obtaining the indulgence, either a week before or week after. It is not necessary to receive these sacraments each time one wants to gain the indulgence, merely once within the octave suffices), and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father must be met at some point.
Amen.
