SAINT PATRICK PARISH, PENTECOST SUNDAY - JUNE 9, 2019
SAINT FLORIAN Patron Saint of Fire & FirefightersPatron Saint of Fire & FirefightersPatron Saint of Fire & FirefightersPatron Saint of Fire & Firefighters
There are several reasons why it’s believed Saint Florian earned the title of patron saint of fire and firefighters: legend says that during his life, St. Florian put out a massive fire with only one bucket of water, saving a village from ruin. St. Florian is often depicted in artwork pouring water from a bucket or small vessel. Many years after St. Florian’s death, a man said he was saved from a deadly fire when he called on St. Florian, begging for his intercession. Because he was killed by drowning, Saint Florian is also often sought out as protector against the dangers of water including drowning and flooding. The feast of St. Florian is celebrated May 4, coinciding with International Firefighter’s Day.
Today, we celebrate Firefighter Sunday with the members of the Watertown Fire Department and
their families. In a particular way today, we pray for all firefighters who died in the line of duty. May we always remember them and all of those in the fire service in our prayers.
St. Florian Pray for us!
Saints of the Roman Canon From Fr. Conley… As I mentioned in my Homily this past weekend, Eucharistic Prayer 1, known as the Roman Canon, is one of the most beautiful prayers in our Mass. This is also the prayer when we invoke some of the coolest saints in intercession. For the next couple of weeks, this section of the bulletin is going to introduce you to some of the more unknown Saints invoked in this prayer. I hope you will find this an enjoyable mini-series and will bring a deeper appreciation of this most venerable prayer.
Linus: The second pope after St. Peter (whose name appears right after St. Joseph in the Canon), of whom we know very little.
His pontificate lasted either from 64-67 or possibly 76-79.
Cletus: Like Linus, an early pope—the third including St. Peter. Often conflated in early lists with “Anacletus.” Cletus possibly
reigned from 76-88, but the historical information on dates of what was essentially an underground Church at this time are sketchy.
Clement: According to tradition, Clement was ordained by St. Peter himself, and became the Supreme Pontiff after Cletus.
(Here we can see the pattern in the Roman Canon: first, the parents of Jesus; then his Apostles; next his popes.) The only thing we know for certain about Clement is that, like all three of his predecessors, he died a martyr’s death.
Sixtus: The first pope of this name (surprisingly five others would take this name, including the patron of, to no one’s surprise,
the “Sistine” Chapel), and another early martyr. Or, alternately, the second pope of that name: regardless, we are still
commemorating early pope-martyrs in this section of the Canon.
Cornelius: A martyr-pope (died 253) who is commemorated in a Memorial on Sept. 16. An ardent defender not only of The
Faith in general, but his own papal authority in particular. Always celebrated with…
Cyprian: Bishop of Carthage and martyr (died 258). Some of his letters and Acta are extant and used in the Divine Office and
make for edifying reading. Born a pagan but converted to Christianity, laid the ground in Carthage for the great Bishop of Hippo, St. Augustine. The first saint in the canon who is not an Apostle or Pope or, naturally, part of Jesus’ nuclear family.
Lawrence: No introduction needed here. After Sts. Peter and Paul, the patron saint of early Rome and one of the most famous
saints of all time. Roasted to death on a gridiron, he’s the first deacon mentioned in the Canon.
Chrysogonus: Who? A very early martyr who appears to have been a layman and a catechist. Like Lawrence, hugely important
to the nascent Church in Rome and a martyr, having been thrown into the sea after decapitation.
John and Paul: Not a repetition of the Apostles, St. John the “Beloved Disciple” and “The Apostle to the Gentiles,” but
brothers in the service of the Roman Empire as officers. They were martyred during the reign of Julian the Apostate in 362.
Cosmas and Damian: Another pair of brothers and martyrs, and known as “the moneyless ones” for their refusal to take a fee
for their medical practices. (They are the patrons of doctors, nurses, surgeons, dentists, and, inexplicably, confectioners). Arguably the first pair of martyr-saints whose rather slim historical information rapidly spread into a full-blown cult in the both
the West AND the East, replete with churches and icons in their honor. Their date of martyrdom is circa 287.

Pentecost One of our neighbors has the most incredible
workshop set up in his garage. He can fix just about
anything with the large assortment of tools hanging on the
wall or tucked away in drawers. He takes special delight in
fixing a child’s bike, or doll, or some toy that had an
accident. We are convinced that he has every known type
of glue, paint, brush, sandpaper, screw, and nail necessary
to fix a toy and mend a broken heart. He calls his
workshop ‘Tools & Treasure.’ The Apostles are sent to preach the Gospel to the
whole world. They’ll need a few tools to fix things like
sin, hatred, fear, illness, hunger, and despair. The Holy
Spirit will give them what they need: wisdom, courage,
knowledge, patience and many other gifts. The things they
say and the miracles they work will be manifestations of
God’s power and glory, signs of God’s love and life. This
workshop could be called ‘hope and grace.’ In Baptism and Confirmation, we are given these
same gifts by the Holy Spirit. They are the “tools of the
trade” that enable us to live and preach the Gospel of
Jesus. Through the Holy Spirit, we are strengthened for the
task of mending hearts, filling stomachs, healing souls,
and dousing the fires of hatred, injustice and sin. When we
are uncertain of which tool we need, just remember the
most important one of all and use it generously. It’s the
same name as our workshop. It’s called love. ~James Gaffney, © 2010 Karides Lic. to St. George Publishing
