SALARIES AND TRENDS FOR 2019
D I G I TA L , C R E AT I V E & T E C H
Despite the prevailing uncertainty around Brexit, it appears to have had minimal effect on the UK jobs market overall. Employment is at its highest ever level, the number of job vacancies has hit a new record and the unemployment rate for women has dropped below 4% for the first time. Growth slowed in the final quarter of 2018 but the number of people on benefits has reduced.
Major Players has experienced a 19% overall increase in the number of permanent and freelance vacancies across the digital, creative and tech industries over the past year.
The UK’s creative industries contributed more than £278m a day, or approximately
£11.5m in every hour of 2017.
Between 2010 and 2017, the creative industries sub sectors - which include advertising, film and TV, architecture, publishing, music, design, games, museums and galleries, fashion, crafts, and the creative use of technology - grew GVA by 53.1 per cent. In total, the UK creative industries employ almost 2m people in the UK, with a further 1m employed in creative jobs in the wider economy, and exports of creative services rose to £27bn.
This year our annual salary survey in conjunction with The Drum shows a range of insights across pay, bonuses, job satisfaction, job security and gender differences in pay. Despite modest
Welcome to the 2019 salary survey
growth in the economy, there were still a significant number of pay rises across the board. Around 60% of respondents received a pay rise and 25% received a rise of over 10%. This shows employers are willing to pay a higher price for skilled and talented workers.
It is also clear there is an increase in brands pushing for greater transparency and control of their marketing and as a result they are bringing some of their creative talent in-house. We are also seeing more demand for in-house creative agencies.
We have also seen a rise in demand for specialist talent in big data & analytics, UX, tech and skilled designers.

GENERAL TRENDSNew advances in tech, including FinTech, AI and VR are continuing to rise alongside automation, programmatic and voice recognition. Brands are expected to move towards in-house creative and marketing, while creative candidates are required to have more digital experience. The decline of print will become even more prominent this year.
HIRING The majority of companies are actively hiring across creative, digital and tech for permanent and freelance roles but has dropped slightly from the previous year’s hiring rate of 65% to 55%.
PAY INCREASES Around 60% of respondents received a pay rise and 25% received a rise of over 10%. This shows employers are willing to pay a higher price for skilled and talented workers.
WHY DO PEOPLE LEAVE THEIR JOBS?Limited career progression is the biggest factor for people wishing to leave their current role, followed by remuneration and culture.
BENEFITSAn increase in holiday allowance and more flexibility are deemed the most important benefits. A work-life balance is also highly sought-after.
EDUCATIONIndustry professionals are well educated with around 88% having a degree or masters.
The survey was compiled by Major Players using data collected from
respondents combined with insight gathered from senior consultants. The table represents an overview of job levels and salary averages in all listed disciplines.
