• The first people who lived on Jamaica were called the Taino.

• They called it Xaymaca which meant “land of wood and water”.

• The first European to visit Jamaica was called Christopher Columbus in 1494.

• Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica.• He was an explorer and he sailed from Europe to

America.

• Some of the Taino people got a disease from the European people and died and got badly treated.

• The taino people were made slaves!• The Spanish brought African slaves to Jamaica and made them work on the

sugar plantation.• In 1655 Britain seized Jamaica from Spain.

.• It was home to many pirates like Henry Morgan. • Slavery continued until 1838 when it was abolished.

Admiral Sir Henry Morgan was an Admiral of the British Royal Navy and a pirate who was known for attacking the spanish people.
