Botswana’s San Camp reopened in July

amid a thin stand o  ilala palms on the

ringe o the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, one

o the Earth’s largest salt fats. The tented

retreat, which operates annually rom April

to October, joins Jack’s Camp and Camp

Kalahari as the only outposts on Uncharted

Arica Saari’s Delaware-size private concession in north-

eastern Botswana.

San Camp’s overscale yet understated tents echo the

vastness and quietude o the surrounding desert. High tea

is served on low tables in a Bedouin-inspired rotunda

strewn with carpets. In the central dining

hall, glass cabinets hold a small natural his-

tory museum o local artiacts and ossils.

Additional tents house a yoga pavilion and

the camp’s six spacious suites, which ea-

ture our-poster beds and teak-lined en

suite bathrooms.

Days around the Makgadikgadi are spent

with the likes o John Barclay, a sixth-generation Arican

saari guide who takes guests hunting or ossils and walk-

ing with Zu/’hoasi bushmen. By night, visitors can venture

out on game drives into the moonlit salt pan. San Camp,
