Today we welcome Chinnor RFC to Lockleaze for a return to Lockleaze
after a break of I believe nearly 4 seasons. After already taking some
notable scalps this season, we should be on our guard about a team much
like ourselves, who can forget first trip up to the Oxfordshire countryside
when we were plying our trade in South West 1 and came back from
Chinnor with not only a loss, but with a couple of beamers for black eyes
and our pride and feathers more than ruffled. They have taken their last
relegation in their stride and built not only a team, but a club true to the
community spirit, a ‘proper’ rugby that all clubs should strive to attain.
Anyway thats the niceties out o the way, let’s get on with the business in hand!
Last week’s loss was hard to take, and the effort put in was only tarnished by a couple of rushes
of blood to the ‘ead’. Whether Worthing took us for granted I’m not sure, but the lads dug in and
played as well as I’ve seen them play away from home. To say I was proud of the effort goes
without saying, even though I’ve just said it! It also brought to an end our mini revival in which
we managed to win 3 on the bounce, a feat that has eluded us well until last season, when
we actually managed to start believeing in ourselves. So only 80 minutes to go and we only
have to get past what I realise is a stern test but we can start the ball rolling again, and maybe
get back on a roll.
Not much to talk about around the club, unless we can feel the pity for a grand club like
Avonmouth, who last saturday failed to honour the fixture against the Knights, but it also meant
that no games at home, but I’m glad to announce that they did manage to get a third team out
to play whoever, who cares! I don’t. Whether the Oggy man resides down south will always be
a bone of contention, it shows how small minded clubs can get, let’s just hope we can get past
Clevedon on December 5th, to make a match made in Heaven!
With regards the development, I am told some bad news, that with the cancellation of the Bendy
Bus Scheme in and around Bristol, John Watkins will have to carry on riding his somewhat
bruised and heavily battered bicycle, over the fields and far away. But good news that we found
out that the ancient oak tree that had the cheek to over hang the Redrow development was in
fact burnt, diseased, drunk, was going to have a heart attack and was going to fall down
anyway, let’s hope we get the same co-operation, when the roof is about to come off, with all
the residents we have attained over the years
Alas last weeks game saw a break in one of the longest playing records I have currently seen,
with Stean Williams finally succumbing and having to cry off, not injured, but a rather nasty
accident to his father Dave, who spent the weekend and at the time of writing may wel still be
in hospital, well I really wish Dave a speedy recovery and boy-oh-boy, he’s now armed and
dangerous with those crutches, so just a warning, he’s a bad loser!
Lastly club stent watch has brought to my attention another member, although it didnt stop him
getting to the Canterbury game to cheers the lads on, hope you get well Kelvin. So back to day,
a win will do us the power of good, with a long trip to Redruth planned next week for both the
1st XV and The Knights, it should make interesting reading?
Come on you Dings Boys!

Welcome to Chinnor RFC
We extend a warm welcome this afternoon to our visitors Chinnor RFC and hope that all players,
officials and supporters enjoy their visit to our Lockleaze ground.
Chinnor were promoted to this league last season via the playoffs after coming second to
Bournemouth in National Three South West. However they are no strangers to this level having
been here twice before the last time was 2008-09 when they were narrowly relegated.
Chinnor have started the season pretty well and are currently in sixth place with four wins from
eight starts and twenty two points including try bonus points from five of their eight games which
is pretty impressive. Recent results has seen Chinnor win two of their last four games Worthing
home 36-21 and Lydney away 23-22 with the losses last week home to Hartpury 8-22 and the
previous week 14-44 at Redruth.
The last time Chinnor visited Lockleaze was in February 2009 when they went away with a close
win 19-15 after we had beaten them away the previous November 20-14.
Good luck to both sides may the best team win and all spectators committed or neutral enjoy
an entertaining afternoon’s rugby.
Cup Matches
We have a home draw against Clevedon in this
year’s Combination Cup which will take place here
at Lockleaze on Saturday 1st December 2012. No
news on the County Cup but its looks as though
after years of struggling to get teams interested it
has finally collapsed and this years competition
looks very doubtful.

Top Touch OracleWe sent the pilgrims back home empty handed
and we almost did it last week at the seaside, but
not quite! If only we didn’t watch so much Rugby
League, perhaps we would understand we are
actually allowed 15 players at once!
Never mind we have a chance this week to
extend the home exploits as we welcome our old
friends from Oxfordshire. Chinnor are a bit like
us, they tend to play for keeps, however they do
come from close to one of our finer universities,
whereas we hail from the University of Life, and
all are honours graduates!
Lydney’s poor start to the season has resulted in
a drop off of spectators at their home games, last
week the bloke on the ‘tannoy’ announced the
crowd changes to the players before the start of
the match.
Well despite my exhortations the ‘girlies’ keep
running in the tries, but of course every right
minded spectator and player accepts this is solely
due to the outstanding foundation laid by the
‘burly boys’ up front.
Well Halloween passed quietly this year, at the
annual party at Clifton, despite their best efforts
to dress up and be scary the front row failed to
frighten anyone and some even thought they had
taken their kids to a ’tupperware’ party instead.
They did have better luck with ‘penny for the
guy’ though, they sat Finks down outside of
John Lewis at the Mall and collected £2.47 for
club funds.
The league is really beginning to shape up now,
with the money men from the posh part of the
country leading the way. It is still a long way to go
though, and if we can keep our discipline there
are a few who will get a nasty shock. Meanwhile
Bristol’s other team managed to win against
Bedford, which was a useful result, they need a
few more of those if they are to put this city
where it should be, in the Premiership Trough.
Reading the match report from Rich Facrkell it
was good to see that Johnny Davies stole the
show. There is a little known story about John.
John has always been a keen follower of the
game, and as we know always takes the
opportunity to talk to anyone about it (whether
they wish to listen or not).
Well a few years ago John was on holiday in
Russia and somehow managed to locate the local
rugby club, which he promptly infiltrated. Having
made himself at home and of course telling
everyone he was from Wales, he was invited to
speak at the annual dinner, which coincided with
his visit. John wishing to be polite did some
research and looked at the nearest public toilet
to ascertain the Russian for ladies and gents.
Having practised he stood up and commenced his
speech with his well rehearsed introduction, only
to be met with howls of laughter and derision. He
questioned his host as to why the cat calls, the
host replied that it was the first time anyone had
started a speech ‘dear Urinals and water Closets’.
Never mind John the thought was there!
So let’s go lads,
DS corner and load
of tries.
