SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY May 27, 2018

sbchurchbrooklyn@aol.com

May 27, 2018 2 SAINT BERNARD

The Trinity is a mystery of our faith because it get to the very heart of the identity of God. No matter how smart we are, no matter how holy we are, we can never wrap our human minds around the divine! That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to understand what we can, and to grow in our lived understanding when possible. Especially if you have questions, trust the God who created you to lead you by Spirit to your answer: even if that takes a long time or doesn’t look like what you think it will. In today’s gospel, Jesus appears to the disciples after his Resurrection. He calls them to a mountain, which is a place to encounter God. Jesus reaffirms his identity by telling the disciples that all the power in heaven and earth has been given to him. And then Jesus tells his disciples that he is giving them the power to baptize in the name of the Trinitarian God. Jesus says that Baptisms must be accompanied by passing on what he himself taught. All of it can be summarized in the Great Commandment: to love God, neighbor and the entire created world. Here we have the Great Commission: to share that love with others. The disciples are to welcome others into the community through Baptism and both tell and show them what it means to be part of a community, loving and serving God and others. Pope Francis encourages us to understand the Trinity as an example of discipleship., for we are called to live “with the other, for the other and in the other.” This means “welcoming and bearing witness to the beauty of the Gospel; loving each other, sharing joy and suffering, learning how to forgive.” Today we celebrate the God who is Love, who was Love, and will always be Love. May we grow in knowledge of each Person, and the Mystery of the God who loves us.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…” – ROMANS 8:16-17 If we are heirs to the kingdom of God, shouldn’t we work to build up His kingdom? Shouldn’t we be good stewards of our inheritance, using our time in prayer, our talent in charitable works and our treasure to care for the Church that God has left to us? Our Church is a treasured heirloom from God. Do we treat it that way?
