Scandinavian Mission Executive Summary:January 10-20, 2013Oslo, Norway | Bergen, Norway | Helsinki, Finland
Participants:Marlee Iverson – Montana Office of TourismMitch Knothe – Idaho Tourism James Scoon – Wyoming Office of Tourism Vicky Engelhaupt – South Dakota Department of Tourism Fred Walker – North Dakota Division of TourismJayne Buck- Visit Denver, The CVBBarbara Stafford – RMI
Summary: Probably our busiest mission ever. We generated 104 leads and met with hundred of travel industry representatives. We gave away 3,000 of the new 5 State Real America Guides (1,000 at Reiseliv with over 40,000 participants and 2,000 at MATKA with 76,477 participants) and ran out at both shows. The new websites were met with rave reviews, with both tour operators and airlines anxious to link to it.
Oslo, Norway (January 10-13, 2013)
Icelandair Meeting:Met with Bjorn Larsen, head of Sales for Icelandair Norway. Bjorn reviewed the new Norwegian website and was very enthusiastic. He will get with Barbara to discuss how best to link to Icelandair’s site in Norway. We discussed the possibility of co-hosting a “Road Show” in Norway in 2015. RMI would coordinate rooms, in country transportation, staff trainings and media lunch in each city (Oslo, Bergen, Stravanga, Trondheim). Icelandair would coordinate a travel agent event in each city. Barbara will come up with a few dates in 2015 and Bjorn will choose whichever offers the least amount of conflict with other travel events.
USA Spesialisten AS : Meeting and (2) Staff Trainings:States and Denver presented two staff trainings with a total of 7 USA Spesiallisten Staff. The revised training powerpoint worked well.On Friday one of the staff who had been in the training told Fred that a person had come to their booth that day at the show and asked if they could arrange a tour for 20 people for the Norsk Hostfest. She said that if he had come two days before she would have not known what he was talking about. June Eggesbro (owner of USA Specialisten) came to our booth to tell us the same thing. She was VERY pleased that we “had brought them” a 20 person tour.
Travel Match:Last year we attended Travel Match prior to ITB. Although we had several good meetings, the quality of the event did not warrant participation this year. The organizers of the event invited us to do a walk through in the hope that we would be encouraged by their improvements. This year was much better organized and attendance was up. Unfortunately, when asked what percentage of the tour operators participating offered US product we were told less than 10%. It is a catch 22, US product specialists are not attending because there are so few states represented and US states don’t participate because there are so few tour operators.
Scandinavian Mission 2013 3
RMI Media/Trade Gathering: Over 25 travel trade and media attended our very informal gathering at a popular pub in Oslo the Dubliner. Widar Jensen, President of the Discover America Committee Norway said that no matter what he tries he NEVER gets that big a group of travel folks at his gatherings. It was a very good start Reiseliv.
Discover America Committee B2B:This event was organized by the Discover America Committee. We were told to expect 60 travel agents, 43 signed up and 23 showed up (see attached list). The Real America had 42 minutes of presentation time. All others had 7 minutes. Great exposure not enough audience. Reisleiv:This is the second year for the “new” Reiseliv. The show is held in the Telenor region (site of the old airport),which is the wealthiest part of Oslo. Show was packed. Demographic is different as the crowd seemed older and more affluent as opposed to the young families we saw at the Lillestrom show. We were invited by the Show Organizers to do a half hour presentation in their main presentation hall. About 30 people participated. We distributed 1000 Five State Real America Guides and ran out about an hour before the end of show on Sunday. It is a good show, but if the Discover America Committee can’t provide a better trade component we will have to take a different approach for trade.
Bergen, Norway (January 14, 2013)
Nordmann-Reiser: Barbara met with Elisabeth Stai while the State reps and Denver were doing a very in-depth training session with 3 of the 5 Bergen based US Product Specialists. Nordmann Reiser has included 4 new fly drives to their catalog and would like to have 4 more for their website. We discussed the new www.rmi-realamerica.no website and our offer to connect visitors to their website through the “Tour Operators and Airlines offering travel to the Real America” page currently being designed. She was very enthusiastic.
USA Showcase (Evening client event w/Nordmann-Reiser):Every year for the last 12 years there was a major travel fair in Bergen the weekend following Reiseliv. This year the fair was cancelled (numbers have been dropping the last several years) and Nordmann Reiser decided to host their own USA “mini-fair”. They launched a newspaper and radio campaign the two weeks prior to the event. Nordmann Reiser reports that over 220 people attended during the 4 hour event. Over 50 attended our half hour seminar on the Real America. We distributed approx. 115 Real America Guides. Excellent event.
Helsinki, Finland (January 15-20, 2013)
Kaleva Travel: Meeting and (1) Staff Training (see lead)
Suomi-Seuron Matkatoimisto Oy/: Meeting and (1) Staff training (see lead) Discover America Committee Finland B2B:53 tour operator/ travels agents (representing 25 companies, 22 USA/PATA Suppliers, meetings 7 minutes each. Mayhem. Some genuine interest in the Real America region but a lot of education to be done in this market. About 40% of them worked with Corporate.
Scandinavian Mission 2013 4
MATKAThere were 7,980 trade at the show on Thursday. Friday (which was closed to trade only until 2:00pm) saw over 28,000 through the turnstiles. Total numbers for show was approximately 76,477. This was an amazing show. Interest in our region was stronger than any of us could have possibly imagined. The States ran out of materials by early Friday (with a few pieces held back for trip assistance) and we ran out of Real America Guides (we had sent 2000 copies) by Sunday early afternoon. Icelandair was very grateful for our presence at the show and we had a chance to discuss (and develop) plans for new promotional strategies to be used throughout the Nordic Market to increase numbers on the Denver and MSP flights. Although this is a great show, our participation as a group will have to be limited to just once every 4 or 5 years. The Finnish numbers are never going to be huge and this is an expensive show when we need a large booth. For the next few years we will send Real America Guides to this show to be distributed at the Discover America booth. If and when we get representation in place this will be a critical show each year at which to be represented.

SCAN13: Pekka from Icelandair brought Patrick to the RMIbooth at MATKA to chat with the states. Patrick is a well knowexplorer in Finland that is working on a film similar to"American Survivor". The show concept will be 2 teamscompeting to return to civilization after being dropped off in awilderness area. They will be using 8 different areas to filmthe program. Each program will take roughly 3 weeks. The show will be aired in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. The teams will need to be dropped into an area of wildernessat least 30-50km in radius so that they won't be able to identifyanything. The months haven't been decided. They arelooking fro 8 areas with extremes (hot, cold, dry, wet, etc). They think that "native America" might be a good angle for theUS portion. There would be 3 camera men per team. Each ofthe State reps gave Patrick their wilderness highlights. Theywill pass his info on to their respective film offices. Overallthey estimate 250 people on the crew. Patrick has alsowritten a book on his adventures and might be interested in afam to our region when he begins process of another book.Follow up: Get your film offices involved. Numbers are good, but not great (their flightsto SF and Alaska are running full and they would like to seeDenver doing the same). We discussed the new www.rmi-realamerica. no and he was very excited. He offered to"sponsor" the site, but Barbara told him that we were going tooffer it up to all airlines serving the region. He said that hecould live with the. His advice was "keep it simple".SCAN12: Bjorn is as excited about the Denver flight as weare. He is already 120% over his sales goals and he said thatthey will run out of seats long before they run out of interest. He told us that in order to make the Norwegian routessuccessful over the long term we will have to stimulateinterest on the West Coast. He thinks that skiing will be veryattractive to these Norwegians, but we have to WOW them.He would like us to send him SPECIFIC information on our skiresort areas as well as "fabulous" ski photos for him to use inhis ad campaigns. We also discussed a tour operator that hehas been working with. The guy has made a fortune selling"as seen on TV" style products and is now offering specialtytours (on TV) that are averaging 1600 clients per tour. The 2week tour goes into Boston and out of Washington DC.Breakdown of participants ages 10% 40-50, 88% 60-70. Hethink that this guy would love to sell a tour to Host Fest.Another promo he just did was to offer a free trip to Iceland ifyou bring a friend (who pays full price for a ticket...a uniqueway to sell two for one). He sold 4000 tickets in less than twoweeks. He made his money by offering a package of "Best ofthe Best" day tours to everyone who bought the tickets (again2 for 1, but tours were pricey and almost 65% of peoplebought them. Not sure how much we would want to getinvolved with this guy, but certainly interesting to hear about.Follow up: Fred send info on Host Fest for Bjorn to pass on.States send ski info that he requested.RS12: Bjorn met with Barbara to discuss plans for the regionwhich will be driven by the new flight to Denver.01/12: Barbara met Bjørn Tore Larsen - Sales ManagerNorway at the Icelandair meeting in DenverRS11: Bjørn has taken over Kjell Olav's position at IcelandairRS11: Made a point of chatting with Elisabeth. They arecurrently offering a lot of US product but it is all in traditionalmarkets (CA, FL, NY). She is looking for anything that will add value to their high end tours. They are putting a lot of emphasis on unique travel product as they feel that that is thebest defense against their major competition ..the internet. Itis easy for their clients to book their own travel in theirtraditional markets so they are looking for non-traditionalproduct. She took our info DVD and will review the itinerariesoffered there.
