SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONSHow do I submit the best application possible?
Starting Out
• Look through scholarship opportunities Eligibility requirements Due dates Application materials
• What do you need to do? What do others need to do?
Early Planning
• Ask for letters of recommendation• Order transcripts• Write drafts of your essay
Letters of Recommendation
• Think carefully about who to ask• The ideal recommendation writer:
Knows you well Can write about your academic potential Would speak highly of you Will actually submit your recommendation
• Be clear: what, where, when• Give the recommender plenty of time
Ordering an Official Transcript
• Campus Connection > Self Service > Academic Records > Official Transcript Request
Ordering an Official Transcript
• You may need to submit a signed consent form
• Delivery Method and processing affects the timing
• You cannot order a transcript if you have a past due balance
• Can you use an unofficial transcript?
Writing an Essay
• Many use similar questions – you can rewrite your own essay to use for many scholarships Of course, you can’t rewrite someone else’s
• Be clear – opening, middle, conclusion• Use transitions in your writing• Use concrete examples, interesting stories
Writing an Essay, ctd.
• Spelling, grammar, and punctuation matter• Double-spaced, 10- or 12-point font• Write, wait, reread• Have someone else proof your essay
Center for Writers is a great resource
Submitting
• 1 week to a few days before the deadline, make sure that everything is submitted/received Follow up with references as needed Did your transcript arrive?
• Submitting at the last minute is stressful and could result in a missed deadline
Receiving a Scholarship
• How will you receive the scholarship?• When will your receive it?• Financial planning and timing
Early costs: application fees, deposits, airline tickets, passport, visa, etc.
Term costs: tuition, program fees, housing, meals, books, etc.
