Sea Level Rise Adaptation Primer;A toolkit to build adaptive capacity on Canada’s Coasts

Kari Tyler, Climate Action Secretariat, BC Ministry of EnvironmentWarming Oceans and Rising Tides: Coastal Adaptation in

Northwest BCOctober 21, 2015 | Prince Rupert

• Sea levels have risen ~ 20cm since 1901, faster than at any time during the last 2000 years.

• The future rate of sea level rise will very likely exceed that observed during 1971–2010

• “We are committed to climate change, and effects will persist for many centuries even if emissions of CO2 stop.”

Climate Change Adaptation Framework

There are many options to adapt to SLR!• Sea walls, dykes• Scour protection• Dune building, Beach nourishment

Protect

• Flood Construction Levels• Wet flood proofing, floatable or elevated homes• Flood storage areas

Accommodate

• Land use restrictions, Zoning• Land acquisition, Land trust• Transfer of development rights
