Facebook Fan Page Secrets
Facebook is a great way to reach your audience. This training will teach you how to
get the most out of your Facebook account. The training consists of four sections.
Section 1 covers social media optimization. Section 2 goes over fan page
customization and Section 3 explains fan page integration. Then, Section 4 covers
Facebook apps.
Let’s begin with Section 1.
4
Section 1 – Social Media Optimization
Social media is a great, free, word of mouth advertising platform. Your posts can get
shared or liked, and people can interact directly with you. You can use this platform
to have a conversation with your audience. Just remember that it shouldn’t be a one
sided conversation. You should use social media to learn what your market wants.
Social media can also help you with link building.
That being said, social media isn’t a substitute for your email list. Your email list
will continue to be your most profitable marketing platform.
It’s also not a substitute for search engine optimization. You’ll need to continue to
optimize your blog and website.
Additionally, it’s not a substitute for your website. You’ll still need your website to
collect email addresses, provide content and sell products.
Now that you now the basics of social media, you need to create a Facebook page.
Set Up Your Facebook Page
Go to Facebook.com and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click “Create a Page.”
Then, you’ll have to select the type of page you want. If you’re doing affiliate
marketing, you should select “Brand or Product.” Then you’ll have to select the
specific brand or product type.
In this example, let’s say you chose “Health and Beauty.”
Once you select your category, you’ll need to agree to the terms. Then, you’ll enter
the name of the brand or product and click “Get Started.”
You’ll need to create a Facebook account or log in with your current account.
Then, you’ll be ready to set up your page. First, you’ll be prompted to upload your
picture. Skip this step for now.
5
Next, you’ll be prompted to fill out the “About” section. Enter some information
about your brand or product. Also, include your website information, along with
information for your other social media accounts.
After you finish that, your page will be set up and ready to use. You’ll be taken back
to your page. If you signed in with your Facebook account, you’ll be invited to “Like”
your page. Go ahead and like it so your friends can see it.
You’ll also be prompted to invite your email contacts to like your page. You can skip
this for now.
Now, let’s move on to Section 2.
6
Section 2 – Fan Page Customization
In this section, I’m going to show you how to customize your fan page.
Legitimize Your URL
Right now, your URL includes a long string of numbers. You can personalize your
URL by creating a username.
Go to the top of the page and click “Edit Page.” You’ll see a drop down menu with
lots of other options. Select “Update Info.”
You’ll be directed to a new page. The page will have a menu on the left. Make sure
“Basic Information” is selected.
Scroll down to “Username” and click “Create a username for this page.”
7
Customize the Look of Your Page
Now, you’ll need to customize your Facebook page. The first thing you’ll want to do
is change the profile image. You need to choose an image that’s 180x180 pixels. Just
put your mouse over the profile picture and then click “Edit Profile Picture.” Then,
click “Upload Photo.” Select the photo you want and upload it to Facebook.
Then, go to the right of your profile picture and click “Add a Cover.” Upload your
cover photo.
Then, go to the top of the page and click “Edit Page.” Select “Update Info.” Make
sure “Basic Information” is selected on the left hand side of the page. Then, fill out
your business information. You already put some information in the “About”
section, but now you can go into more detail.
Once you do that, you’ll be ready to get some “Likes” for your Facebook page.
Get More Likes
The Static HTML iFrames App will help you get more likes. This app lets you
display different content to people who have and haven’t liked your page. It’s
referred to as a “like gate” because you can use it to give people an incentive to like
8
your page. For example, you can use the app to offer a free gift to people who like
your page and sign up for your email list.
I recommend that you hire a web designer to create your templates for this. Just tell
the designer what type of incentive you want to offer and then let him get to work.
Install the Static HTML iFrames App
Go up to the search bar and type “Static HTML.” Select the app. Then, you’ll get a
message that says you’re using Facebook as your page and you have to continue as
your profile. Go ahead and continue.
You’ll be redirected to the static HTML page. Click “Add Static HTML to a Page.”
Next, you’ll have to choose the page. Then, the app will install.
Go back to your Facebook page. Go underneath your cover photo. Once there, you’ll
see a list of applications. Click on the arrow to expand the list. Go to a blank box,
click the plus sign and select “Static HTML iFrame tabs.”
9
Then, place your mouse over the Static HTML icon. Click on the pencil icon and
select “Edit Settings.” Then, change the name of the tab. I recommend changing it
to “Welcome” or “Learn More.” Save your changes.
Build Your List
Now, you’re ready to add your autoresponder to your Facebook page. Go back to the
search bar and type “AWeber” into the box.
Go to the AWeber Email Marketing app. C lick “Continue” and then select “Add App
to Page.”
Choose your page and click “Add Page Tab.”
Then, go back to your page and click “Edit Page.” Select “Update Info.” Then, select
“Apps” on the left hand side of the page. Scroll down to AWeber and click “Go to
App.” Then you’ll go to your AWeber account and customize your form.
Once you do that, you can change the name if you want, just as you did with the
iFrame app. Just go through the same steps. You can also change the picture if you
would like.
Tell Your Story
You can use milestones to tell your story. Scroll about halfway down the page, to the
section where you can post status updates. Once there, you’ll see a tab that says
“Event, Milestone +.” Click on it.
Select “Milestone.” Then, fill in the milestone and give the story behind it. For
example, if you founded your business in March of 2010, you could add that as a
milestone. Also, add a relevant picture.
10
Promoting on Your FB Page
Once your page is set up, you’ll be ready to use it to promote your products. You
don’t want to promote with every post. Promote a product every three or four posts.
In between your promotion posts, send people to cool content and great videos.
Now, you’re ready to move on to the next section.
11
Section 3 – Fan Page Integration
In this section, I’m going to show you how to integrate your Facebook page. Let’s
begin by looking at different developer plugins.
FB Developer Plugins
There are a couple of ways you can integrate Facebook with your website. First, go
to developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins. Once there, you’ll see a list of all the
plugins Facebook offers. You can use these plugins for a variety of purposes. For
instance, plugins allow people to:
Click on the plugin you want to install. Then, scroll down and click “Get Code.”
You’ll need to place that code on your website. Unless you have experience with
HTML code, you will probably need to hire someone to do it for you. You can find
someone on Elance.com to put the code in for you.
Your other option is to get the Wordpress Facebook plugin. First, I’m going to show
you how to create your website and Wordpress blog. Then, I’ll talk about this
plugin.
Like your page Like your content Share your content Comment on your content
12
Setting Up Your Site
In order to set up a website, you are going to need a domain address and a hosting
plan. Your domain name will be your URL. Your hosting plan will keep your
website up and running.
Getting Your Domain
While there are lots of places that sell domains, I recommend using NameCheap.
Once there, you’ll see a search box. Type an idea for your domain into the search
box. The idea should be related to your business. For example, if you’re in the
“weight loss” niche, you can search for ideas like “WeightLossSecrets.”
When you search for a phrase, you might notice that the “.com” extension isn’t
available, but “.me” or one of the other extensions is available. I recommend going
with the .com. Thus, if the .com isn’t available, look for a new domain name.
Once you find a domain name you want, click “Add to Cart” and purchase the
domain. Then, you’ll be ready to sign up for hosting.
13
Get Your Hosting Plan
You can host your website with a variety of companies. I recommend using
HostZilla. Go to HostZilla and click “Sign up Now.” Then, you’ll need to choose your
plan. You can sign up for the Starter Plan. Just find the plan and click “Order
Now.”
Then, you’ll be able to purchase or transfer your domain. You should already have a
domain with NameCheap, so you will need to transfer your domain. Thus, you’ll
need to use the “Transfer My Domain” box.
Select “I’ll Update my DNS Settings.” Then, type the domain name in and click
“Continue.”
Next, you’ll need to enter your billing information and select the payment plan.
Look through the extras that are checked and remove the domain privacy, since
you’ll get it for free when you purchase a domain name from NameCheap.
Finish filling the form out and then click “Continue.” Then, HostZilla will email you
with your account information. The email will include your name servers. You’ll
need to input those servers into your NameCheap account. Once you do that, your
domain name will point to your hosting account.
14
Updating Your Name Servers in NameCheap
Sign into your NameCheap account and click on “Domains.” Then, select “Manage
Domains.”
Select the correct domain and then click “Transfer DNS to Webhost.”
Then, put your hosting information into the boxes and save your changes. Once you
do that, your NameCheap domain will point to your hosting account.
Using Your Hosting Account
Go to your cPanel and log into your hosting account. HostZilla will send you a link
to the cPanel in your welcome email.
Once you log into your hosting account, you can create an email account. Just click
“Email Accounts” and create a professional account.
After your email account is created, you can start adding files to your website. Go to
“File Manager” and select the website. Then, you’ll go to a new page, where you can
upload files for your website.
You can also go to your cPanel and click on the link that says “Set up Your FTP.”
Once there, you will need to download and install FileZilla. Then you’ll be able to
log in remotely and transfer files.
Once you install FileZilla, you will need to open it up and type in your website
address, username and password. Next, you’ll need to select “Quick Connect.” Then,
it will pull up your website so you can add files.
If you aren’t comfortable adding files to your website, post a job on Elance. You can
find someone to build your site for you. That will make the process much easier.
15
Adding WordPress to Your Website
After your site is up and running, you can add a blog to it. You can use your blog for
a variety of purposes. First, of course, you can use it as a traditional blog. You can
also use it to create a “Members” area. Also, you can use your blog to get more
Facebook fans.
Just log into your cPanel and scroll down to the “Fantastico De Luxe” icon and click
on it.
Then, select “WordPress” and click “New Installation.”
Next, select your website and add a new directory. That way, your blog will show up
as a new page on your website. You can name the page anything you want, but
make sure the name is related to the blog’s purpose. For example, if you’re going to
use the blog as a member’s area, name the page “Members.”
Fill out the rest of the form and then click “Install WordPress.”
Fantastico De Luxe will install Wordpress for you. Once it’s competed, click “Finish
Installation.”
16
You’ll be taken to a new page. Enter your email address. Your installation
information will be sent to this email address. You’ll also receive a link to the
control panel. Click on the link and log in to your blog’s dashboard.
Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the blog’s features. Also, if you have
experience with creating blogs, you can set your blog up. However, if you aren’t
familiar with the process, hire someone on Elance to do it for you.
Wordpress FB Plugin
After you create your blog, you’ll be ready to install the WordPress Facebook plugin.
First, log into your blog. Go to the Dashboard and select “Plugins” from the menu on
the left. Select “Add New.”
Type “Simple Facebook Connect” into the search box and then click “Search
Plugins.”
Go to the plugin and click “Install Now.”
Then, click “Activate Plugin.”
17
A message will come up telling you that you need to configure the information on
the “Settings” page. Click “Settings.” A new browser will open up. Be sure to leave
the Wordpress page open as well, since you will have to go back to it.
Click “Facebook application list.”
Select “Continue” so you can go on to Facebook.
Then, click “Create new app.”
Name the app and leave the other boxes blank. Click “Continue.”
Enter the CAPTCHA and click “Submit.”
Scroll down to “Website” and click “Log into my website using Facebook.”
Then, type in your site’s URL and save your changes. Leave the Facebook page
open.
Now, go back to Wordpress. You’ll see a spot for your app ID. Go back to Facebook
and copy the application ID. You’ll find it near the top of the page. Once you copy it,
go back to WordPress and post it in the box.
Then, you’ll see a box for the application secret. Go back to Facebook and copy the
code. Then, paste it into Wordpress.
Next you’ll need your Facebook fan page ID.
Go to your Facebook page. Then, copy the numbers that are located in the URL.
Paste those numbers into Wordpress.
Then, save your changes.
18
Configure Your Plugin
WordPress will pull up the SPC Modules. These are the different features you can
activate with your plugin.
I recommend selecting:
Once you make your selections, click “Save Changes.”
Then, you’ll need to update a couple of settings. First, go to “Login Settings” and
check the box so you’ll be able to use Facebook avatars.
Then, go to “Like Button Settings” and choose where you want to put the “Like”
button.
You’ll also need to choose the like button layout.
Then, enable the “Send” button so people can send your content to other people.
Once you do that, go to “Publish Listings” and choose how you want your posts
published. You can choose to have your posts automatically published to your
Facebook page. I highly recommend you do that.
Then, you need to click “Grant SFC Permission.” Select “Login with Facebook” and
then click “Allow.”

Then, scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure it says:

Social Posting
Now, it’s time to post on your blog so you can make sure it’s integrated with
Facebook.
Go to your WordPress dashboard and click “Posts.”
Select “Add New.”
Enter the title of your post. Be sure to include a keyword in your post title.
Then, go down to the body. That’s where you’ll actually add your blog post.
Scroll down to the “Excerpt” section. If you don’t see an excerpt section, scroll up to
“Screen Options” and make sure the excerpt box is checked.
Then, fill out the excerpt box. Keep in mind that if someone likes your post on
Facebook, the excerpt will show up with the “Like.”
Then, you can also add a picture. Once you’re done, click “Publish.”
Go to your Facebook fan page and make sure your post automatically updated to
Facebook.
Now, it’s time to move on to the next section.
