ABSTRACT
elf inating tire system is an automaticmechanism for maintaining proper level of pressureinside the vehicle tires, or in other words it is an
automatic ination or deation system used intires. This system reduces the wear of the tread ofthe tire and increases driving comfort. !t alsoincreases feel e"ciency and ensures safe driving.
The main self inating used are #T! and T$system.

Detect when the air pressure in a particular tirehas dropped, this means they have to constantlymonitor the air pressure in each tire.
Noti'ythe driver about the problem
In(ate the tire back to the proper level, this
means there has to be an air supply as well as acheck valve that opens only when needed.

CENTRAL TIRE INFLATION SYSTEM
The idea behind the #T! is to provide control over the air
pressure in each tire as a way to improve performance on
di&erent surfaces. 'or e%ample, lowering the air pressure in
a tire creates a larger area of contact between the tire and
the ground and makes driving on softer ground much
easier. !t also does less damage to the surface. This is
important on work sites and in agricultural (elds.Another function of the #T! is to maintain pressure in the
tires if there is a slow leak or puncture. !n this case, the
system controls ination automatically based on the
selected pressure the driver has set.

A 0** ,* is located at each wheel end. 'or dual
wheels, the valves are typically connected only to the outer
wheel so the pressure between the two tires can be
balanced. *art of the wheel valve+s ob is to isolate the tire
from the system when it+s not in use in order to let the
pressure o& of the seal and e%tend its life. The wheel valve
also enables on-demand ination and deation of the
tires.An **#$%" %"#$% '"# (ECU) mounted behind the
passenger seat is the brain of the system. !t processes driver
commands, monitors all signals throughout the system and
tells the system to check tire pressures every / minutes to
make sure the selected pressure is being maintained. The

The pneumatic control unit also contains a sensor that
transmits tire-pressure readings to the 0#U.
An %*$,#%$ %"#$% ,"* allows the driver to select tire-
pressure modes to match current conditions. This dash-
mounted panel displays current tire pressures, selected
modes and system status. When the driver selects a tire-
pressure setting, signals from the control panel travel to the
electronic control unit to the "*'/,# %"#$% '"# to
the wheel valves

TYRE MAINTENANCE SYSTEM
The system has three main components1
The tire hose assembly provides the air route to inate
the tire and has check valves so that the air lines and
seals do not have to be pressuri2ed when the system is
not checking or inating the tires. This cuts down on
wear and tear on the seals.
The rotary oint is comprised of air and oil seals and
bearings and connects the air hose from the non-
rotating a%le to the rotating hubcap. !ts air seals prevent

The manifold houses the pressure protection valve,
which makes sure the system doesn+t pull air if the
brakes+ air supply is below 3/ psi. !t also houses an
inlet (lter to keep the air clean, a pressure sensor to
measure tire pressures and solenoids that control
airow to the tires

The A!456 system is a constant monitoringsystem that uses a series of check valves todetect a loss in air pressure.
When a tire loses pressure, due to a punctureor other seepage, a series of check valvesautomatically detects it.
The ystem then immediately draws air from
the vehicle7s pneumatic system and directs it toeach tire requiring air.
The air pressure is delivered via the trailer7shollow a%le housing.
The air then goes through the hub assemblyand into the tires. !t is completely isolated from
the brake system

MERITOR TIRE INFLATION
SYSTEMThe $eritor Tire !nation ystem 8$T!9 is designedfor use on tractor-trailers. !t uses compressed air
from the trailer to inate any tire that falls below itsappropriate pressure. Air from the e%isting trailer airsupply is routed to a control bo% and then into eacha%le. The airlines run through the a%les to carry airthrough a rotary union assembly at the spindle end
in order to distribute air to each tire. !f there issigni(cant air-pressure loss, an indicator lightinforms the driver.

CONCLUSION
Automatic tire pressure ination system has manyadvantageous bene(ts in the transportation industry.
These bene(ts include, improved vehicle mobilitydue to the increase in traction when tire pressuresare lowered, improved ride quality and cargo safety
due to the reduction in vehicle vibration when thecorrect tire pressure is used for a particular roadcondition, reduced road maintenance becausesediment production is limited and lowered road
construction cost, increased fuel e"ciency and aconsiderable increase in the tire life of the vehicles.
