March 2018
The White House officially recognized March as National Professional Social Work
Month in 1984. From 1984 until 1998, the centennial year of the Profession, NASW
selected a social issue to promote every year. Topics included the health care crisis,
hate crimes, violence prevention, racial and ethnic harmony, HIV/ AIDS, children in
poverty, aging parents, value of work, homelessness and more. From 1998 to 2004,
Social Work Month themes promoted the profession with general campaigns about
who social workers are and how they benefit society.
Let’s Celebrate Our Social Workers
Sharon Felton, Lynne Barrett and Joe Ericksberg with a special lunch.

not be open. This decision will be made by City
Hall. You may call the Senior Center on a snow
day and speak with one of the staff (if we are

Happy March to all! We’re that much closer to spring is what I keep telling myself. After a few storms – not the worst we’ve experience in New England – I am still longing to see color as I look out my kitchen window. On the other hand, I am learning to appreciate each season of the calendar year as well as in my own life. Time is going too fast as I watch my one-year-old grandson grow by leaps and bounds. As you read this newsletter, I will be starting my sixth month as the Director of the Salem Council on Aging. I have enjoyed my first half year very much, surrounded by caring, excellent colleagues and wonderful participants and volunteers who make this center so vibrant and meaningful. The energy here is positive and I am grateful for being a part of it all. As we wait for spring, I wish you a little Irish luck…
"For each petal on a shamrock This brings a wish your way,
For health, luck, and happiness For today and every day."
~Terry
Developed thousands of years ago, Qi Gong is practiced by people worldwide as a way
to experience a healthier and more active life. The gentle fluid movements are known
to increase energy, open the joints, and stretch and strengthen muscles.
Qi Gong is an excellent form of exercise for Seniors because it is low-impact, and can
be practiced regardless of age, ability, flexibility, or activity level. Studies have shown
that practicing Qi Gong regularly can improve balance, relieve pain and arthritis
symptoms, increase mobility and reduce stress. The Qi Gong taught in this course can
be practiced sitting or standing. Please note transportation is available at 4:00 pm
Thursdays, 3:00- 4:00 pm March 1st - April 5th
Backgammon is one of the oldest board games known. It is a two player game where each player has fifteen pieces (checkers) which move between twenty-four triangles (points) according to the roll of two dice. The objective of the game is to be first to bear off, i.e. move all fifteen checkers off the board.

them. From the functioning of the ear, to assistive technology to aid in communication

The Registry of Motor Vehicles has partnered with area Councils on Aging (COA) to provide five of the most common transactions online at COA sites to hopefully decrease wait times at registry branches. The Salem Council on Aging is one of the COAs. Transactions are:
-License renewals (for licensed drivers younger than age 75) -Registration renewals -Change of address -Duplicate license or registration -How to report a lost or stolen disability placard & how to request a replacement
You must have a valid checking account orc credit card to process any transaction (no cash will be accepted). The packet is usually placed on the refrigerator so emergency personnel can quickly obtain information about your medical conditions and medications. Packets are available at the Salem Council on Aging in the Social Service Department waiting area on the 2nd floor. For those who already have one posted please remember to update your medication list or any other changes on the form. Call the Social Service department at 978-744-0924 if you would like us to mail you one.
SALEM FOR ALL AGES: On January 19, 2017, AARP Massachusetts Director Michael Festa came to Salem to present our certification from AARP and the World Health Organization as an Age-Friendly City. In October 2015 Salem started this process by officially joining the WHO’s Age-Friendly Network, becoming one of the first cities in Massachusetts to do so and the first on the North Shore. The goals of a livable, safe, and vibrant city serve to lift up all our residents, no matter their age or ability. they also provide the roadmap toward one that is prepared for the changing demographics that we see in our community’s future. This road map, Salem For All Ages, focuses on the key “domains” of an age-friendly city: supportive community and health services , civic engagement and participation, employment and volunteer opportunities, respect and social inclusion, appropriate housing in a range of affordability, vibrant outdoor spaces and public places, and effective, sensible transportation options. Within each domain there are action steps in order to achieve its vision. Implementation and evaluation of the plan will be carried out by a task force of community volunteers and City officials that has already met to begin work. They are supported by a Leadership Council made up of community leaders, as well as those who work directly with our senior population. In Salem we are thoughtful about how we approach the future. Great cities do not happen by accident. They take careful planning, public input, and meaningful action. For more information regarding the Salem for All Ages action plan, please visit www.Salem.com
