INTRODUCTION

Disobedience is a failure of faith

before it is a failure in sin

THE MISSION GIVEN

Joshua 23:1-13

- They are told to “take possession of the land” as the nations are “pushed out”

- They are told not to enter into partnerships (covenants) with them, or serve their gods, or intermarry with them

- This military activity is to be accompanied by a very close and vital spiritual life—a walk with God

THE REASONS FOR THE FAILURE Judges 1:19-35

THE FAILURE FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE

Judges 2:1-4

The Israelites essentially said, “We could not drive them out”, but God said in response, “You would not.”

God says that they failed to “break down their altars”

The Israelites were first faithless, then failures

Disobedience is a failure of faith before it is a

failure in sin

We underestimate the impact of faithfulness in

the “small things.”

And we underestimate the impact of

faithlessness in “small things.”

OUR OWN FAILURES OF FAITH

Is there any place in your life that you are not taking this promise

seriously?

Where are you saying “I can’t” but God is saying

“you won’t?”

When we say, “I can’t”, God says “He can”,

and He can in and through you.

THE GRACIOUS PROVISION OF REMEMBRANCE

-What God has done, and who He is

Amnesia leads to Apostasy

The obedience of faith comes from remembering what Jesus has already DONE

GILGAL AND THE LORD’S TABLE

The Angel coming from Gilgal puts the repentance on a “grace” basis rather than a “works” basis
