1 & 2 Peter both are written in a more “traditional” epistle form, with an introduction, a body, and a salutation

The introduction gives the writer, audience, and introduces book themes

2 Peter’s introduction sets up a discussion about another aspect of perseverance.

It addresses (1) a problem that God’s people have had before. Cf. Deut. 31, 2 Pet 1.12ff.

It addresses (2) an obstacle to perseverance that God’s people have had before. Not sin or suffering … serpents (false teachers).

2 Pet 1.3-21, which discusses how the saints’ coming salvation and current conduct relate to each other and how the church is to continue when the apostles are gone

2 Pet 2.1-22, which warns of false teachers and their coming judgment

2 Pet 3.1-13, which reminds once more of coming salvation and judgment as motivation for holy living

1 Peter in Detail: 1.13-25

The first part of chapter one (1.1-12) sets the tone.

It begins similarly to Ephesians: a blessing/praise for God’s work of salvation.

It has some particular emphases:

1. (1.3-5) We’ve been reborn to 3 things:

4. (1.10-12)This is a plan that’s been in place a long, long time.

5. (1.11) This mirrors what was predicted for the Christ, who suffered first and then was glorified.

Faith, Life, and CommunityJames is an epistle about the work of the Word of God, incarnate and written, as expressed by the faith and in the lives of God’s people; in particular, the way God’s people wisely abide within and shape by their own words and deeds the community of faith as an incarnation of the Word, His Body on earth.

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word is the good news that was preached to you.(ESV)

The first 4 deal with preparation and focus of hope: preparing; disciplining; wholly; anticipating.

The last 3 deal with result of hope in practical living: obeying; forsaking; sanctifying.

Christian hope, here a command, is not an ethereal concept.

It is grounded in preparation.

It is total.

It results in holy living.

“You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

(Saintly Behavior and Sanctifying Blood, 1.17-21)

And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. This passage “hooks” back into 1.13-16 in a few places.

Hope looking forward to the revelation of Christ so much that you live like Him now.

Live in a way that honors the sacrifice that was made for you, so people know whose child you are.

Love each other in a way that never, ever fails, so that people know what God's life-rebirthing Word is like.
