The Giralda was built in the Mudejar style, which is the architecture style of the Moors. It covered the bell tower with lace-like stone work.

Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 to discover the “New World”. By the 16 th Century Spain became the superpower of the time, controlling much of the Americas, the Low Countries, Central Europe and the Philippines. All the riches of the Americas were used to finance Spanish wars in Europe and to build Cathedrals. Seville was the centre of Spanish trades with the Americas. By the 17the Century, Spain managed to bankrupt its treasury.

The Cathedral was built on the site of the Great Mosque in Seville. The Giralda Tower was changed from a minaret into a bell tower. Construction began in 1402. It took a century to complete.

The Cathedral of Seville is the largest Gothic church and the third largest church in the world. At the time of its completion, it supplanted the Hagia Sophia as the largest Cathedral In the world.

Its proper name is the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Sea.
