AWARD-WINNING ARTIST RICHARD CLARE has been fasci-
nated by landscapes from a very early age. Most weekends were spent
with a sketchbook in hand walking the moors and dales of the Peak
District and Yorkshire, the nearest counties to his hometown of
Sheffield, and later throughout The British Isles. Since those early days of discov-
ery, Richard worked for over 15 years in the graphics industry before becoming a
full-time artist in 1998.
His painting technique is based more upon memory recollection supported by
sketches and photographs, depending on his choice of subject. “Walking in the
landscape, soaking up the atmosphere is just as important as the final act of paint-
ing. I am not particularly interested in lifelike realism as I want the viewer to
complete the picture in their own minds” says Richard.
Many artists continue to inspire him, especially The French Impressionists, Abstract
Expressionists and The Scottish Colourists, all these art movements conveyed shape
and form via colour and bold mark making.
In addition to vibrant colour, light quality plays a huge part in his
work, just one of the reasons why he made the bold decision to move
to Italy in 2007. He now divides his time between Barga, a hilltop
medieval town in Northern Tuscany, the Italian/French Riviera and a
studio base in northern England.
“Strong use of colour always plays a major role in my work, it is what links my
wide subject matter. From cityscapes to the landscapes of northern England, Italy
and France, whether plein air painting or studio-based work. Even adding colour
where there is none, I want to create my own colourful world in my paintings,
they cheer people up on a dull day, even my colour-blindness adds another
dimension!” says Richard.
He has received media attention in national magazines, won several awards,
including finalist in a competition organised by The International Artist magazine,
where over 3000 entries were received from all over the world. His paintings are in
private collections throughout Britain, Europe and as far as USA and Australia.
