Biodegradable Plastics
For Food Packaging
BIODE make Any Plastic Biodegradable
National Green Tribunal : What about the 70% of plastic waste
Ministry of Environment Plastic Waste Management, 2016:
Multilayered Plastic to be phased out or made recyclable within 2 years !
Himachal Pradesh High Court: Use Biodegradable Plastic Food Packaging::
Why Plastics?
➢ No chlorine or peroxide used, unlike recycled paper
➢ Less energy and almost no water during production
➢ Flexible ,strong, recyclable, any shape
➢ Package anything, unlike jute or paper
➢ Wide range of applications from bags to rockets
Why Biodegradable Plastics
➢Non degradable plastics :30% of total waste by
volume in landfill
➢Degrades in only few months to few years
➢Environment friendly and does not pollute surface
and underground water
➢Degrades better than other degradable plastics
(see Value Canvas)
➢ Keeping ahead of Govt’s regulations and Court orders
➢Making Profits
Biodegradables
✓ Unlimited shelf life, Food grade,
✓ Non Hazardous, no heavy metals or toxins
✓ Certified by CIPET and FDA on food grade
✓ The only Biodegradable in India, which degrades under landfill conditions
also
✓ Tested and certified under international standards (ASTM 5511, ISO15985 )
✓ Brands you Green and sustainable with a modestly higher cost
✓ MoEF’s 2011, MoEF 2016 Notification: charge for bags ; Revenue
generation
Why Sustainability as Strategy/Soul: End
Consumers
Time Magazine, in its September 21, 2009, cover
story, describes it as a trend to “enlightened self interest”.
6 in 10 have bought organic products since January 2009;
82% consciously supporting local or neighbourhood businesses;
Ethical investment funds up from 55 to 260 since 1995 (US$2.7 trillion, 11% of all financial market investments);
78% would pay US$2000 more to get a car that goes 35 mpg over a 25mpg car.
Why Sustainability as Strategy/Soul : Exports
Sustainability considerations are expectations, not options, in many of our major markets (USA, Japan, Europe)
As living standards rise we can expect consumers in other markets to see these as requirements, not unaffordable aspirations
If we’re serious about exporting we need to be serious about making our products more sustainable Source: NZ Business Council for sustainable development
Comparison of different degradable plastics
Comparison of Characteristics of Ecopure Biodegradable, Oxo additive and PLA/PHA Bioplastics
Value Element Ecopure Biodegradable Oxodegradable
Applicability to all polymers Almost all ( except Nylon 6,6 ) mainly Olefin group
Landfill Biodegradability (
Anaerobic )
Very High biodegradability wet landfills, High in dry landfill No "biodegradability", Fragmentable
Time period of biodegradability 1-4 years Not biodegradable; fragments in max1 yr
Regulatory Compliance High as mimics natural conditions Banned by Dept of Environment, UK*
Food Grade Yes High probability of Heavy Metals migration
Shelf life Unlimited ( same as Non Degradable Polymer products) 3-4 Months ( Breakage begins )
Production/process changes
required
None Almost none
Recyclability High Very Low
Strength & Flexibility High for all polymers Low; dependent on time
Heavy Metals None Heavy metals ( Ref DEFRA, UK )
Cost Cost Effective Cost Effective
Value & Customer Satisfaction High Very Low
Comparison of different degradable plastics
Note: Oxo-Degradable has been banned by European Parliament and European Bioplastics Association a “non degradable” under specific and rigorous standards

Comparison of Characteristics of Ecopure Biodegradable, Oxo additive and PLA/PHA Bioplastics
Value Element Ecopure Biodegradable PLA & PHA ( Starch Bioplastic )
Applicability to all polymers Almost all ( except Nylon 6,6 ) mainly olefin group
Landfill Biodegradability (
Anaerobic )
Very High biodegradability wet landfills, High in dry landfill Low in landfill, high in Aerobic
Time period of biodegradability 1-4 years Aerobic (0.5Yr-2 Yrs ), Anaerobic 2-4 yrs )
Regulatory Compliance High as mimics natural conditions High as mimics nature
Food Grade Yes Yes
Shelf life Unlimited ( same as Non Degradable Polymer products) Very Low ( 4-6 months )
Production/process changes
required
None Processes disrupted, Production might change
Recyclability High None
Strength & Flexibility High for all polymers Very Low, Dependent of time
Heavy Metals None None
Cost Cost Effective Expensive ( 2-5 times Ecopure & Oxo)
Value & Customer Satisfaction High Low

Toxicity Test - Seed Germination
Significant differences (% of seed germination and root/shoot
growth) were not observed between results obtained from the test
and those obtained from the control, therefore, the residuals are
considered to be Non-Toxic. [ OECD # 208 ]
Control ----------------------Treatments --------------------
Earthworm Acute Toxicity Test
◼ An earthworm acute toxicity test was conducted in which,
organisms are exposed to high concentrations of a test
substance for short periods of time.
◼ The toxicity test for 14 days used was a European test (OECD
Guidelines #207). The results of this test indicate that when
biodegradable plastic residue is added to soil, acute mortality
is NOT evident
