TESCO• The name «Tesco» first appeared

in 1924, after Cohen bought a tea party in their companies in T.E. Stockwell initials and combined with the first two letters of his name (Cohen). • The first Tesco store was opened

in 1929 in the county of Middlesex in North London. His business grew rapidly, and by 1939 he had more than 100 Tesco stores across the country.

SAINSBURY’S

• Founded in 1869, by John James Sainsbury with a shop in Drury Lane, London, the company became the largest grocery retailer in 1922, was an early adopter of self-service retailing in the United Kingdom, and had its heyday during the 1980s.

MARKS&SPENCER

• Company Marks & Spencer founded the Michael Marks - Jewish immigrants from Slonim (now the territory of Belarus). He opened the penny bazaar (Marks Penny Bazaar) in the port of Hartlepool (North East England), which sold pins and other products. In 1884, Marx moved to Leeds, where he met with Thomas Spencer and merged his business with her.
