“THE MONKEY’S PAW”

TEXT ANALYSIS: MOOD

Writers create mood through:

• SETTING DESCRIPTIONS – time and place

• IMAGERY – descriptions that appeal to the senses

• DIALOGUE – conversations between characters (pauses, quickness, etc.)

Mood is the feeling or atmosphere the writer creates for the reader.

How is MOOD created?

HOW CAN MOVIE POSTERS HOOK YOU?

• What makes a movie poster striking?• Colors? Slogans? Artwork? Images?

Fonts? Hints? Titles? • Turn to your partner and discuss how

movies are advertised via promotional posters

MOVIE POSTERS USE IMAGERY TO HOOK YOU!

How?

• Movie posters are two-dimensional representations of the movie itself. However, skilled artists are paid BIG BUCKS to design posters which appeal to the publics’ senses.

• Review the following posters and discuss which senses are most affected…

THE HUNGER GAMES

VARIOUS DISNEY MOVIE COVERS

TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN

THE MAZE RUNNER

“GET READY TO RUN”

ANNABELLE

HARRY POTTER

CREATE A MOVIE POSTER: EXPLORE IMAGERY

Imagine that “The Monkey’s Paw” is to be made into a full-length movie. Brainstorm images, colors, and text you would use if you were in charge of creating the movie poster. You

will design a poster that communicates a mood for “The Monkey’s Paw” without giving away the ending. You will also create a QR code with an explanation of the poster and how

it creates a certain mood. We will share these in class!

Walk around the room, without talking, and check out all the posters.

Find three posters that catch your eye.

Number your notebook page with:What you see…What you think…What you wonder…

About the PosterThen, check the QR code to see the answer!
