Message from Fr. Bryan
“The Light shines on in darkness, a darkness
that did not overcome it.” (John 1:5). We heard
these magnificent words from Saint John’s
Prologue proclaimed on Christmas morning
and they remain true for all eternity.
As I write this column, the media is full of end
of the year and even end of the decade lists.
Imagine that in 2010 we could go out to dinner
without feeling the need to take pictures of our
food and post them on our Twitter feed!
Unfortunately, most of these media lists are
replete with dark moments, in the year 2019 in
particular. In truth, there were many examples to
choose from, in our world, in our country and
within the church itself. The darkness can
discourage us and even, in our weaker
moments, seem to gain the upper hand.
The fact that the Light shines on is not a pious
thought but a truth rooted in the Incarnation
itself: “a weary world rejoices.” After finding
the Messiah at Bethlehem by the light of a star,
the Magi did not remain gazing at the Christ
Child forever. We can be sure that they did not
return to star-gazing. Their lives were changed
forever by their encounter with Jesus, the Light
of the World. So it must be for you and me! As
present day disciples of Jesus, we are called to
carry the Light of Jesus Christ in our hearts and
share it in our corner of the world: through word
and concrete action. Saint Teresa of Calcutta
would famously say, “do small things with much
love.” So this 2020, live with a little more kind-
ness and courtesy, speak with gentleness and
charity, reach out with compassion and thought-
fulness, conduct yourself with integrity and hon-
or. Be grateful. The Light does indeed shine on,
in fact is all around us: “You are the light of the
world!”
Blessed New Year,
Father Bryan Parrish, Rector
