The word catholic means universal. This term became an important descriptor of the church at a time when some believers claimed that the gift of “true” faith in Christ was only intended for a privileged few. These people were known as “illuminati” (enlightened) or “congoscenti” (knowledgable). The bishops pushed back on this heretical movement by declaring that the gift of faith was intended for all not just some and began to describe itself as the catholic church.
Next Sunday we will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ we will be reminded of His “great commission” to the apostles before taking his place at God’s right hand. He told them: Go into the whole world, making disciples of ALL peoples; teaching them to obey all that I commanded you; baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are a truly catholic church because we welcome all to share with us the gift of salvation.
But there are factions with the present day church who claim that you can only call yourself catholic if you adhere to certain doctrines and follow certain practices. Now it is certainly true that all catholics are called to be of one mind and one heart and that God’s grace makes it possible for us to follow Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life. It is true, nonetheless, that at any given time ALL of us fall short of the glory of God. We are capable of falling both into error in terms of doctrine and into sin in terms of our moral failings. But does the Lord abandon us and boot us out of his church when we go astray?
In this church all are welcome to become friends with each other; with Christ; and with those he described as the least of his brothers and sisters. Our faithfulness is measured not simply by our mastery of doctrinal beliefs or moral rectitude, but also by our reaching out to the poor, the lame, the blind, the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the homeless, the sick and the imprisoned. In this way we can become holy even as God is holy.

Teacher Training in Oklahoma City NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING
June 1-4, 2017
Natural Family Planning (NFP) is an umbrella term for certain methods used to achieve and avoid pregnancies. These methods are based on observation of the naturally occurring signs and symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of a woman’s menstrual cycle. NFP reflects the dignity of the human person within the context of marriage and family life, promotes the openness to life, and recognizes the value of the child. A teacher training has been scheduled for June 1-4, 2017 at the Catholic Pastoral Center, 7501 N.W. Expressway, Oklahoma City. The training begins Thursday night at 6:30 pm, concluding on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. For training registration information go to boma-usa.org. For lodging and meal information please call the Office of Family Life (405)721-8944 or visit our website at archokc.org.
