We need new metaphors.

Why must we dream in metaphors?

We're trying to hold on to something

we couldn't understand

Factorial Notation

Definition:n! = n•(n-1)•(n-2)•(n-3)• ......•3•2•10! = 1

Examples:4! = 4•3•2•14! = 24

Examples:6! = 6•5•4•3•2•16! = 720

Combinations (the "Choose" Formula)A combination is arrangement of objects where order does not matter.

n is the number of objects available to be arranged

r is the number of objects that are being arranged.

The Triangle Method ...

We use the triangle method when the vectors are arranged tip-to-tail.

Scale: 1 cm = 2 km

Remember, we use measurements with a ruler and protractor to find the "answers."

Identify each of the following quantities as scalar or vector.

(g) The boat was headed N42°W across the lake.

(h) The tires were worn out after 120 000 kilometres of driving to and from work.

(f) Jess jogged six blocks west along Portage Avenue.

(e) Jeff was driving at 100 km/h for 40 minutes.

(d) There are 24 students in math class.

(c) Today we had a 30 km/h north wind.

(b) The airplane flew 515 km/h at a bearing of 315°.

(a) There are five people living in the house just north of yours.
