UNDEVELOPED LUNGS

• Leading to Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is an abnormal development of lung tissue.

• Dysplasia are changes in the structure or organization of a group of cells.

• BPD is one of the most common chronic lung diseases in children.

HEART DEFECTS

• Maternal Smoking and Congenital Heart Defects• Most common type of birth defect, affecting nearly 40,000 births in the US each year.

WHAT ARE ORAL CLEFTS?• Cleft Lip

• Tissue of lip and mouth do not join• Small slit from lip to nose• Opening on the upper lip

• Cleft Palate• Soft palate tissue does not join • Makes gap in top of mouth

LONG-TERM COMPLICATIONS • Feeding problems• Ear infections and hearing loss• Speech problems•Dental problems

STILLBIRTH• Fetal death occurs after 20 weeks• Very uncommon• 1 in 160 pregnancy’s result in stillbirth• Smoking causes birth defects that can lead to stillbirth• Umbilical cord accidents• Being pregnant at an older age

LOW BIRTH WEIGHT/PREMATURE • Less than 5 lbs 8 oz• 1 in12 born are low birth weight• More likely to cause• Diabetes• Heart Disease• High Blood Pressure• Metabolic Syndrome• Obesity

SIDSSUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME

• Leading cause of death of infants in the US.• It can be reduced greatly by not smoking while pregnant.

WHAT'S THE SAFEST WAY TO QUIT SMOKING DURING PREGNANCY?

• Avoid situations that make you want to smoke.• Spend time with people who don't smoke, and visit places where smoking isn't allowed.• Wait out cravings by running an errand or eating a healthy snack.• With your health care provider's OK, use physical activity to manage withdrawal

symptoms.• Make sure you have someone you can talk to for support.• Set a goal and create a reward for meeting it. For instance, if you quit for a certain

length of time, use what you would have spent on cigarettes to buy something for the baby.
