Sokol Detroit Unit Meeting Minutes
February 7, 2017
First Vice President, Sr. Carol Brandon, called the meeting to order at 7:00PM. Thirteen
members were in attendance. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
It was reported that former Sokol Detroit member, Gino Abaldo, passed away in Venice,
Florida, on January 10, 2017.
Correspondence: Newsletters were received from Sokol Greater Cleveland, Sokol St.
Louis, and the Czech Catholic Union.
Srs. Ann Marie Hurych and Kirsten Conely were excused. Sr. Conely submitted a list to Sr.
Brandon of members who, as of this date, have not submitted their 2017 dues. Sr.
Brandon read the list to the members present.
BOI: Sr. Lynn Conrad reported. This semester’s gymnastic classes are full, and there is
insufficient staff to open up new classes. The club is currently seeking additional coaches
and will train, if necessary. The camps held for the weeks between Christmas and New
Year’s Day and after New Year’s Day were extremely successful. A camp is scheduled
for the mid-winter break in February and the spring break in mid-April. Northeastern Dis-
trict competitions will be held in Cleveland on May 13. Approximately 12-16 of Sokol
Detroit girls will attend. There was discussion on hotel arrangements for the Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, National Slet, June 22-25, 2017. The Summer Sokol Detroit Gymnastical is
tentatively scheduled for Sokol Camp on Sunday, June 11, 2017.
UPC: Br. Alex Novacek is excused. Br. Ronald Balint asked for clarification on cottage
owner dock ownership. Br. Eric Singley, UPC board member, was able to answer many
of Br. Balint’s questions and suggested that he contact Br. Novacek to share the dock
space list. Br. Novacek will be present for the March 7, 2017, unit meeting, and the
Budget Forecast for future projects will be reviewed.
Scholarship: Br. Bruce Singley is asking that members submit their scholarship
applications in May. There were four donations to the Scholarship Fund in January in
honor of Br. Frank Turchan, Sr.

Czech Language School: Br. Petr Peska has been experiencing some health problems
but is continuing the Czech School this year. Five students are dedicated students, and
two other students attend occasionally. A new student, who contacted Sokol Detroit on
language classes and for possible membership, will soon join the class. Sr. Rose Wiggle
will be giving Sr. Melanie Mily, 2017 Membership/Interviewing Director, the name and
contact information of this interested, prospective member.
Sokol Cedar Rapids Slet: Sr. Brandon, at the request of Sr. Renata Greene, asked the
membership present if Sokol Detroit should place an advertisement in the Slet’s souvenir
booklet – this year’s slogan is “The Tradition Continues.” A motion was made by Sr. Cheryl
Singley and seconded by Sr. Diana Balint to place a full-page advertisement, with
photograph, in the booklet. The motion passed.
Annual reports are due and should be submitted to Sr. Wiggle as soon as possible.
The September 2016 and January 2017 minutes were approved as submitted.
As there were no comments for the good of the order, the meeting was adjourned at
7:44PM. The next meeting will be held at 7:00PM on March 7, 2017, at Sokol Center.
Respectfully submitted,
Rose Wiggle,
Co-Recording Secretary
