Water on EarthSources of Water

Water is an important natural resource. The quantity of water available on the Earth is huge but its distribution is not uniform.

About three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. About 97.4% of water on Earth is found in five oceans.

Of the remaining 2.6% about 2% is frozen in glaciers and ice caps. So, only 0.6% is available in liquid form.

Around 0.59% is present as ground water in the vacant spaces between rocks. So, only 0.1% is available as fresh water on the surface of the Earth.

A small percentage of water is present in the sky in the gaseous form as clouds.It comes down as rain and ultimately flows into the sea. Lets learn about the

various sources of water on Earth.

Oceans and SeasSources of Water

Most of the water on Earth is stored in seas and oceans. This water cannot be used due to large quantity of salts dissolved in it. However, oceans are

the ultimate source of all water on Earth.

Polar Ice CapsSources of Water

The water in the Arctic and the Antarctic is frozen into glaciers and polar ice caps. The water present in high mountain ranges is also frozen. Although this water

is pure, it is not available for human consumption.

Rain WaterSources of Water

Rain Water is a major source of water. Rain water flows into rivers and finds its way back into the sea. Rain water also gets stored in some natural and artificial lakes.

Ground water is the water that seeps through the soil and collects above the non-porous rocks deep under the ground. This water can be extracted

for use by digging wells and borewells.

The ground water is pumped out by farmers to be used for irrigation. In cities, the ground water is used for domestic and industrial purposes.

at suitable locations on rivers.
