The Republic of South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of Africa, with a 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) coastl ine on the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, To the nor th l ie Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; while Lesotho is an independent country wholly surrounded by South African terr itory.

South Africa is known for a diversity in cultures, languages, and religious beliefs. Eleven of f icial languages are recognised in the constitution. [English, despite having a large role in public and commercial l ife, is only the f if th most-spoken home language.South Africa is ethnically diverse, with the largest European, Indian, and racially mixed communities in Africa. Although 79.5% of the South African population is black, the people are from a variety of ethnic groups speaking dif ferent Bantu languages, nine of which have of f icial status. [About a quar ter of the population is unemployed and l ives on less than US $1.25 a day.
