SOUTH CENTRAL REGION OF
SPRING, 2010
Hi everybody,
I really enjoyed my weekend in Richardson at the South Central Regional
meeting. It was very relaxing for me and great to see everyone. But….way
too short.
Our business meeting was very productive. Looks like we will have a good
meeting in 2011. We definitely will be changing the location for our meeting.
Donna will be looking for a new meeting place – maybe a state park or time-
share condo. We are heading a little north – trying to make an easier trip for
the Kansas gals. We hope to find a place about halfway. Mid-Oklahoma
would be great. So, more on this later.
Attendance was good – 20 painters, including our instructor. Gail Ruth did an
excellent job with our diversified group of painters. All took home very nice
pictures. Thanks a lot, Gail. And….the weather held out. Hooray.
Our 2011 South Central Regional meeting will be March 26th
and 27th
. So, set
these dates aside.
Election of officers was held at the business meeting with all officers
remaining the same for the next 2 years.
I am mulling over several ideas for the next meeting. More on that later.
Thanks to all who brought items for the silent auction. It was a huge success.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL MEETING March 26th-27th, 2011
Location to be announced
“Painting is silent poetry, and
poetry is painting with the gift
of speech.” (Simonides)
Most of us would agree that a 2-year interval is too
long between meetings and hopefully, everyone
who attended the meeting this year is already
looking forward to 2011’s South Central meeting.
The change of venue is certainly an exciting
prospect and we hope to have a new meeting
location worked out in the very near future. Just as
soon as we have found an establishment that will
accommodate our group, we’ll let you know.
It was great seeing so many new faces at our
meeting as well as our long standing members.
New members always seem to add new life to any
organization. I urge all the new members as well as
those of you who have been in the group for many
years to keep in touch with me via email –
nevasgallery@yahoo.com – to let me know of your
projects-- past, present and future, so I can let the
other members know what our group is doing. As
you know, our newsletter is published on the
TEAM website – www.artteachers.org -so members
of other regions will also be aware of what our
people are doing.
Gail Ruth led the group in painting two beautiful oil
paintings this year. We appreciate her efforts and
hope you all enjoyed her method of teaching. The
two pictures were of completely different subjects
and everyone went home with very lovely paintings.
We all had our favorite, but I’m sure everyone
would agree they were both fun to do.
Carolyn brought a “word search” game comprised
of art terms and after the business meeting, we all
raced to see who could finish first. Regina Bell was
the first to finish.
The silent auction table had some really great items to
bid on this year. The bidding was competitive as usual
and our total was $189.00.
It was also great to see so many entries in the Artist of
the Year contest. Hopefully, some of the new members
will enter a picture next year and maybe even some
“old” members will bring something. Only the winner
of the 1st place prize is ineligible to bring a painting next
year. Everyone else should have something ready to go
by next March.
“Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass…it’s
about learning how to dance in the rain.”
Minutes of the 2010 meeting:
Team Leader, Carolyn, opened the meeting with the
discussion of next year’s meeting dates. The two dates
were February 26th and 27th or March 26th and 27th. We
voted for the March dates.
Next on the agenda was the location. We all agreed it
was time for a change. Three states were discussed –
Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Our choice was
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Actually it is about half way
for both the Kansas City and Texas gals. I will be looking
into motels, hotels, state parks and other places. We
are looking for accommodations like we have in
Richardson – (large meeting room for us to paint in,
group rates for our rooms which should include a
kitchen, etc. Any suggestions please let me know at
dmclewell@yahoo.com. In the subject, write South
Central. Thanks. Before a final decision is made,
Carolyn and I will check it out. Mini vacation!!!
Neva asked us to send your news to her so she may put
it into the newsletter. This can be personal or
professional. Also, send her pictures.
Future registration forms will have a space to include
your email address if you have one.
Neva is working on the group roster which will be sent
out with the newsletter. Members at the meeting
made the necessary changes to the one she had. If you
were not at the meeting, email Neva with your name,
address, phone number and email address if you have
one.
FYI: Our TEAM website is: www.artteachers.org.
Regina Bell was the first to finish the Art Search. Thanks
Carolyn. We enjoyed it.
Our bylaws were handed out and then we held election
of officers. Re-elected to a 2-year term are:
Team Leader Carolyn Vandeventer
Secretary Donna Clewell
Treasurer June Head
Newsletter Neva Shaw
On Sunday we voted for Artist of the Year.
Congratulations to the following:
1st Prize $50.00 Margaret Johnston
2nd Prize $40.00 Carolyn Vandeventer
3rd Prize $30.00 Katie McCarty
Honorable Mention Regina Bell, Pat McGrew
Submitted by: Donna Clewell, Secretary
Gail Ruth led 19 artists through two days of
painting and fun!
In spite of all the serious faces, we really did have a
good time.
I’m already getting excited about next year’s
Regional meeting. New places, new faces, (some, I
hope) new paintings, brand new experiences.
Can’t wait! I know Carolyn is already making
plans for another great meeting and we’ll have
some surprises for you next year. Mark your
calendar—road trips are fun! The Kansas gals have
been doing it for years. We rent a van and share
expenses for it and the gasoline, so costs are not
prohibitive. While we enjoy the trip to
Richardson, even though it takes about 9 hours,
we’re all looking forward to a shorter trip next
year to “somewhere in Oklahoma”. We’re all
humming the sound track to Oklahoma in our
minds.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: This will be the last newsletter you will receive if you have not paid your 2010 dues. If you have not paid yet and intend to remain a member, send your check for $20.00 to: June Head, 12341 Wingfoot Dr., Kansas City, Ks. 66109.
ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Margaret Johnston took home the 1st place prize for
Artist of the Year. She won a blue ribbon and $50.00.
Carolyn Vandeventer Katie McCarty won the Won 2nd prize. She took 3rd place prize with a Home a red ribbon and a white ribbon and a check check for $40.00. $30.00.
Regina Bell and Pat McGrew each received an Honorable Mention ribbon.
Congratulations to everybody.
Don’t forget, you can read our newsletter on the TEAM website at www.artteachers.org. You can also see a slide show of our members. Click on the “activities” link after you access the South Central Region and the slide show will come up.
Be sure to check out the other regions’ activities and newsletters as well. It’s interesting to see what is going on in our National organization. I think we sometimes forget that we are a part of a very large and very important art community. Our little group of artists is but a small part of the larger nationwide organization of artists and art teachers that
encompasses the entire country. I feel fortunate to be a member of this national group of artists. It would be a shame not to acquaint yourself with the other artists and teachers in TEAM. You can see a wide variety of paintings and see photos of the artists who painted them on the website.
Webmasters Harold Champagne, Ollie Trawick and Smokey Beare have done a terrific job with this website. Every time I log on, it seems there is something new to see.
In the Art World….
A Picasso masterpiece not
seen in public for more than
four decades has sold at
auction for $13 million –
more than twice the
expected price. “Tete de Femme (Jacqueline)”, a
portrait of the Spanish
artist’s second wife had not
been seen in public since 1967,
A masterpiece by
Marc Chagall rarely
before seen in public
is to headline the
auction at Bonhams in
June and is estimated
to bring more than $18 million.
“I found I could say things with colors that I couldn’t
say in any other way – things that I had no words for.”

News from …….
Regina Bell entered three paintings in the annual Van Zandt County Fair in Canton, Texas. She won 1st place for the portrait of her father and for the wine jug she painted in Richardson. Her bluebonnet landscape received a 2nd place award. The portrait of her father was the first portrait she has ever painted.
Artists from Van Zandt County bring their art, photography, knitting, canning, etc. for judging. Ribbons are awarded but no cash prizes.
She also entered some paintings in the Mineola, Texas are show sponsored by the Art Association. Though she did not win this year, she has won in the past.
Congratulations, Regina!
Jo Legg is hosting a seminar for Robert Warren in Paris, Texas in October. She sent the following information:
We would like to invite all members of the South Central Region to join us for a very educational seminar and a diversified group of 3 paintings to enhance your learning experience. The seminar will be held at one of the local hotels (tba) and the cost of the seminar is $275.00 if your deposit of $150.00 is received by June 1st, 2010. Anyone signing up after that will pay the full seminar fee of $300.00. We will provide the canvases, paint, medium and a full set of instructions for the projects.
If you have any questions about the seminar, please contact Jo Legg at 580-326-1262 or e-mail me at jo@jolegg.com.
These are the 3 paintings Robert will be teaching. If you’d like to see more of his work, go to his website at www.robertwarrenartloft.com.
Hotshot, a member of the Desoto, Ks. Art Shack artists, looks over the next painting the group is going to do. He declined comment but he usually gives a “paws up” on all our choices.
IMPORTANT….. On the next page you will find a list of members with addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Please look this over and if your information is incorrect, please email me with the corrections.
