Southwell School, is a private school for boys and girls aged 5-13.
New Zealand
New Zealand has two large islands:– the North Island
and– the South Island.
Hamilton is in the North Island.
The Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa (Land of
the long white cloud).
The capital city of New Zealand is Wellington. It’s in the North Island.
The New Zealand flag looks a lot like the Australian flag.
1. It’s red, white and blue;
2. It has the Union Jack; and
3. It has the 4 stars of the Southern Cross.
It doesn’t have the two pointer stars, and the
stars are red instead of white.
The Maori have their own flag like the
Australian Aborigines have their own flag.
On the Aboriginal flag,Black means the Aboriginal people Red means the red earth, Yellow means the Sun, the giver of life.
Hamilton is a modern city. 140,700 people live there.
It has two names: 1. Hamilton is its
English name.2. Kirikiriroa is its
Maori name.
Weather in Hamilton
• They don’t have very good weather in Hamilton. They get a lot of rain, and in summer the hottest temperature is only about 22° to 26 °C . They hardly ever get really hot days that are good for swimming and going to the beach.
• Sometimes in the winter the temperature goes down to −5 °C and there are frosts and thick fog, but it doesn’t snow.
Hydro-electricity in Hamilton
• They have lots of water in Hamilton so they use it to make hydro-electricity.
• Hydro-electricity is clean electricity made from water.
The Waikato River in Hamilton
• The Waikato River is New Zealand's longest river. It’s 425 kms long.
• There are many bridges across the river at Hamilton.
