The Spanish Colonies

Intrigued by Columbus’ voyage.

Motivated by the search for gold.

Wanted to build settlements and expand its empire.

This would make Spain richer and powerful.

Where did the Spanish settle?

The Spanish colonists settled in the southern and southwestern regions of North America and Modern Day Florida, as well as parts of the California coast.

Spanish Government…

Colonies were governed by crown-appointed governors.

Settlers had to obey the king’s laws and could make none of their own.

Spanish Religion…

Settlers had to be Catholic.Protestants were persecuted and driven out.

Spanish Economy

Very large trading economy.Some farming. Controlled by the Spanish board of trade.

Regulations enforced by the Spanish military.

Spanish Relations with Native Americans

Spanish missionaries saw Native Americans as heathens. They wanted Native Americans to convert to Christianity.

Catholicism

The Spanish took many Native Americans back to the Old World with them to work.

Spain established missions where Native Americans worked to make a profit for the Spanish.

Worked in mines, ranches and farms.

French Colonies

Where did the French settle?

The French settled in Quebec (in Canada), Montreal (in Canada) and Louisiana.

French Government…

The French colonies were fully subject to the French King.

No political rights, representative government, and public meetings could not be held without permission.

French Religion..

Even though Protestants played a role in the founding of New France, they were excluded from the colony.

Settlers practiced Catholicism.

French Economy..

French government encouraged farming efforts.Plantations in the Mississippi valley failed.Fur trade worked best.

Traded a lot of the time with the Native AmericansBeaver fur

French Relations with Native Americans.

French respected Native Americans and their religion.Did not force Native Americans into their religion.

Befriended Native Americans and created a peaceful and beneficial friendship.

Indirectly boosted Native American Economy.
