‘Long reign our
gracious Queen’...
and so she has!
60 Years at the realm, so much has
changed in this time, however, our Queen
has remained consistent in so many ways.
There are lots of events organised over the
Diamond Jubilee long weekend from house
parties, street parties and village parties to
local venue events! I hope you enjoy
spending time with friends, family and
neighbours in celebrating this historic
milestone. Please send your photographs
for publication in the July issue of the
Arrow.
Another event to look forward to this
month is the Olympic Torch relay which
will pass through Doncaster on Tuesday
26th June. Two historic events in one
month!
As well as the national events taking place,
June is the month for the Annual
Sprotbrough Scout Gala and Road Race.
Check this month’s Arrow for the latest
information.
The deadline for the July issue for
advertising and articles is Wednesday 20th
June. The Arrow will be delivered from
Friday 29th June.
Best Wishes

Annual Scout Family Gala
and Road Race
Welcome to the annual family gala and road race! At the time of writing this article, we are being ‘deluged’
with spring rain! Hopefully by June we will see good weather to accompany our day. This year forecasts,
continued spectacular community support and participation in both the road race and the gala itself. We
are joined again by ‘Military Fitness prior to the race to ‘warm up’ and ‘cool down’ at the end of the 6.5
Km. We also welcome some new and regular support from stall holders, including some tractors to look
around.
All the funds we raise do go back into ‘scouting ‘here in Sprotbrough which enables our young people to
participate in a range of activities- orienteering, canoeing, camping, national navigation schemes, cooking
competitions, sporting competitions. Our Scout section once again utilised their skills following their
cooking experiences and, transformed the head quarters into a romantic cosy bistro for what is now an
annual Valentine’s event and provided an excellent meal and evening.
Thanks must go to the local businesses, family and friends who provide the support and finance, where
necessary which makes our role so much easier to complete for this event. Family participation is very
important and valued in the Scout movement and this event would not be able to succeed without the
whole ‘Scout family’.
As with all families , we gain valuable members and sadly we lose some as well…
A SPECIAL THANKS goes to Lindsay Graves, who has contributed greatly as a Scout helper
and leader over the past ten years. Other family commitments and time itself , have lead
Lindsay to take a ‘behind the scenes role“ now. We were able to present our thanks at the
annual Ceilidh, where Lindsay will still support as part of the catering team. We would also
like to say “Thank you” to Tanya Smith. As a member of the Scout Supporters group for
several years, she has contributed in the collation of this programme, as well as numerous
tasks in catering, helping on stalls and even ‘roping her mum, Beat, and brother’s family into
this event. As families grow up they move on and so we wish them well.
Our final thanks in this section go to members of the community, who are no longer with
us but who have contributed greatly behind the scenes to ensure our event goes smoothly.
Our thoughts go in particular to the Walden family, this year.
And so finally…. if you are reading this for the first time and have never been along to the Gala, it is a
community and family event not to be missed! If you have participated in previous years, ‘thank you once
again’ and we hope you have an enjoyable afternoon, whether you are doing battle as a ’gladiator’ or run-
ning the race, or settling for a pint and listening to the band. There is something for all the family. Anyone
who wishes to register to enter the race can do so on line via our website, but you can still register on
the day.
Hope to see you there!

A History of
Sprotbrough Hall,
Doncaster. Part 3
The principal Copley achievement in the field was
the winning by Colonel Christopher Copley,
Lionel’s brother, of the small battle of Sherburn,
which, however, was of great value to the Parlia-
ment, as resulting in the capture of Charles’ confi-
dential and extremely compromising correspon-
dance with Lord Digby in the matter of raising the
Irish Catholics, and the occasion of the impeach-
ment of Stafford in 1640 had been a phrase in a
letter to Charles which was constructed to refer
to raising an Irish force for service in England. We
mention this in passing as there are 2 portraits of
Stafford at Sprotborough – one a Van Dyck, show-
ing the statesman caressing a greyhound, similar
too, but in better condition, than the one at Wen-
tworth; the other shows him with his secretary, an
engraving of it is appended to his “Letters.”
The Lionel Copley who succeeded Sir Godfrey died at Bath without heirs in 1719, and Sprotborough went
to a son of one of Sir Godfrey’s daughters – Joseph Moyle of Bake in Cornwall, who adopted the name of
Copley and was created a baronet in 1778. His second son, Sir Joseph, was mixed up with the old scandal
of the Earl of Abercorn at the end of that century. The Earl had married a Miss Copley for his first wife,
whom, since she had poor health, he more or less ignored. On her death, having for some time been in
love with his cousin, a Parson’s daughter, Cecil Hamilton, he persuaded Pitt to get the King to confer a
title on her that he, the Earl, might marry her without injuring his family pride. The plan was carried out,
but they were not happy, and the lady was subsequently divorced and married Sir Joseph Copley, her
predecessor’s brother. The daughters resulting from this union were famous and witty young ladies in the
years succeeding Waterloo, and, known as “Coppy” and Maria, corresponded with naughty old “Creevy”
and were the somewhat unapproachable queens of the Radical Kingdom.
‘Coppy’, the more brilliant of the two, died unmarried in 1887, while Maria married Lord Howick, son of
Lord Grey of the Reform Bill. When their brother died in 1883 the house again went to a collateral, Sir
Charles Watson, who added the name of Copley to his own, and whose daughter, Lady Copley, is the
present representative of the long line which most cursorily we have surveyed.
The family history is remarkably well illustrated by a mass of family portraits, though, by their copiousness
many are hard to identify. In the hall, however, we see Sir Godfrey, M.P.,F.R.S., above the boldly moulded
chimneypiece, painted by Kneller. This hall and the entrance hall next to it are practically the only rooms
in the house that have not been redecorated. At the eastern end of the former there is a charming deriva-
tive of the mediæval and Tudor screen, in the form of an arch flanked by two flat topped doorways, which
gives on to the stairs. The carving is very restrained and fine, and two diminutive spandrels, containing
cupids’ heads occupy the spaces above the arch, while panels with broken corners surmount the two
doors.
9
A set of five excellent walnut-veneered chairs (two with arms), are present. They are an early example of
the type of chair associated with the name of Chippendale, from which the shaped splat, and flat cross
piece at the top, familiar in Queen Anne chairs, have not yet quite disappeared. At the opposite end of the
hall hangs the Stafford Van Dyck, above a Nonesuch chest in excellent preservation, with the original
tinned hinges and a hanging box inside.
Sir Godfrey is recorded to have paid £150 to Henry Cooke to undertake the internal decorations. All of
this artist’s work, which is pointed out as such, are some rough chalk portrait sketches, but it is fairly
certain that he painted the ceiling in a little boudoir, marked in the plan. Cooke was employed at Hampton
Court on the Cartoons of Raphael, which he is said to have executed in turpentine, a manner of his own.
This was probably a kind of ‘thin oil’ painting, and the ceiling in question is not very striking, whether for
colour or design, in that the greater part is a blank, with the heads and shoulders alone of the deities who
should have filled it showing as though peering over the cornice. If Cooke did any more work, and it is
probable that he did, none remains, though it is possible that some of the ceilings now whitewashed were
originally covered by his design. The rooms on the south front, as we mentioned above, were redecorated
during the early 19th century, at a time, the only time, when the house was let and not in the occupation
of the owners.
Sprotbrough Hall and estates were sold off in 161 lots at the Doncaster Guildhall in September 1925.
Earlier, a number of tenants had bought their holdings by private treaty. F.S.Gowland of Ripon, bought the
hall along with 115 acres of the estate for £9100. By 1926 the hall was being demolished to make way for
new development. Reputedly, the hall was knocked inwards using the rubble to fill the cellars up to
ground level, the excess stone was used as the foundations for the houses on Brompton Road. So, if you
live on the Park Drive estate in Sprotbrough, and your spade hits something hard in the ground, you may
just have found a little piece of the Copley’s grand country seat!

SLIMMING WORLD MEMBER LOSSES
WEIGHT FOR CANCER CHARITY
FIREFLY Slimming World Member, Joy Hudson has done a sponsored slim in aid of FIREFLY, the local charity
that transports patients and their spouse/partner to hospital for appointments.
One of Joy’s dearest friends is currently undergoing cancer treatment and the help and support firefly has
given to her friend and her husband has been terrific. “My friend is so brave I wanted to do something to
help her so I decided to lose my 3rd stone with a sponsored slim in aid of firefly.”
Joy has been a teaching assistant for a Reception class in a Doncaster Council school for almost 13 years
and says “I’d been overweight for most of my life starting as a chubby baby, through to my teens and later
as an adult.” Having 3 children added to her weight problem and the final straw came when Joy found
herself buying a pair of size 22 jeans together with over hearing someone say “Oh, she’s let herself go and
whilst the comment wasn’t directed at me,” says Joy “I felt it applied.”
Some of Joy’s friends were already following the Slimming World plan and she often bought the Slimming
World magazine to read of people’s success in losing weight. She was very impressed with the results she
saw and decided that she wanted ‘a piece of the action’ too.
Joy joined Linda’s Sprotbrough Slimming World group held at St Mary’s Church Hall every Monday at
5:00pm & 7:00pm, in July 2011 and has successfully lost 3 stone. “Because I am nearly 60 I still want to
lose another stone and maintain that weight” says Joy. “I can’t believe how much better I feel about
myself and feel sure that entering the next decade will be much easier to cope with in all aspects of my
life, especially my health.
“I have lost my weight by following the Extra Easy
plan as it suits me and my lifestyle perfectly. I love
the fact that I can still enjoy a full english breakfast,
spaghetti bolognaise and chilli con carne. Slimming
World has taught me how to control what I eat and
because there are not too many restrictions, I don’t
feel guilty if we go out for a meal. I tend to choose
steak, jacket potato and salad where possible but
when I go to Indian, Italian or Chinese restaurants
then I make careful choices and enjoy my night out.
The support I have received from Linda, my fellow
slimmer’s and my family and friends has been
instrumental to my success. I plan to continue
attending the group after I reach my target weight
for the continued support of my consultant and
group. I was very apprehensive when I first joined,
especially as I had no idea how much I weighed but I
would say to anyone don’t be frightened or
embarrassed, the support, help and guidance is there
for you.”
