Today’s Objective•Think about the role of formative

assessment in a proficiency-based learning system▫the relationship between content ELTs and

Formative Assessment is …

•“… on-going assessments, observations, summaries and reviews that inform instruction and give students feedback …” (Fisher & Frey, 2007 in Dodge)

•“… assessment for learning …” (Stiggins)

Formative assessment does not …•Need to be lengthy or take a long time

•Need to be graded like summative assessments BUT “when you use formative assessments you must keep track of the data you collect.”

Formative Assessment & ELTs•Gr. 5 Math: Understands (in context) the

concept of rounding decimals to any place using place value (G)▫I know and can tell the value of any digit in a

whole numbers▫I know and can tell the value of any digit in a

decimals; I can read decimals, like .1 is “one tenth” and .34 is “thirty-four hundredths”

“descriptions” of the activities you did to formatively assess students

and pictures in terms of the story convey meaning.▫ I know where the words/letters are that are telling the
