St. Vincent de Paul Society St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Vincent de Paul (or "Vincentians" ) are men and
women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those
in our local community. Vincentians wish to be the Face of Christ. To this end, our
SVdP Society operates a thrift shop offering clothing, house-wares and religious
items for sale as well as a modicum of financial assistance and a list of resources of
other helping agencies.
If you feel the call to serve in this corporal work or to make a donation of your
household items or financial resources, call 269/388-4544. Can you help?
Lent is a call not just to ―give up something‖ but more important to ―give some-
thing for the poor.‖ Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within
walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are,
in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of Saint
Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor.

The promises made to Abraham go
beyond his wildest dreams – he will
be the father of a great nation, as
numerous as the stars in the night
sky. Saint Paul challenges the Philip-
pians to imitate him and to stand
firm and faithful in the Lord. The
glory of the Transfiguration gives us
a glimpse of the glory of the risen
Christ.

From the Office of
Liturgy and Music
Think of your typical experience at-
tending Mass here or in other parish-
es. What are we doing well and what
do we need to improve? I know it is
frustrating as a musicians to look
down from the organ loft and see
barely a third of the gathered com-
munity participating in singing the
chants, hymns and acclamations of
the liturgy. Why is this? Thomas Day in
his book Why Catholics Can’t Sing
issues a strong reprimand to Irish piety
that was conditioned by centuries of
censure under the Protestant laws of
Cromwell. He notes that anything that
drew attention to the Mass such as
boisterous singing had to be sup-
pressed so that the entire liturgy could
go on without interruption by law en-
forcement. There are obvious exam-
ples now of exceptions to this obser-
vation: the music department at
Notre Dame University and its Basilica
with its magnificent new organ. How-
ever, the fact remains that compared
to their German, Polish and French
brethren, Irish Catholic piety remains
subdued and quiet and this influ-
ences the overall ethos of worship
throughout the US which is founded
solidly on the genuine efforts of Irish
immigrants.

St. Augustine Food Pantry
At this early point in our Lenten journey, our readings remind us of God’s promises
to humanity and his faithfulness to those promises. Full of the same hope that once
spurred Abraham on to leave his homeland and Paul to preach the Gospel with
commitment and fidelity, they now seek to encourage us in our Lenten disciplines.
Is care for those less fortunate part of your Lenten discipline?
Donations of nonperishable foods and toiletry items are
always in high demand and are most welcomed!
Items may be placed in the collection boxes located in
both entrance of the Church. Of particular need are
breakfast cereal and meal-makers such as
―Hamburger Helper.‖
We are also in need of your volunteer talents. This is an opportunity particularly
suited to the retired or part-time employed. Please call 269/375-1571. The Pantry
hours of operation are M-W-F from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Diocesan and Cathedral News
Monday Evening Adult Faith Formation Bible Study Priest, Prophet, King by biblical scholar Bishop Robert Baron, is a video series illumi-
nating Jesus as the Anointed One, the ultimate priest, prophet, and king and how
Jesus is foreshadowed in the Old Testament. Since Christ is the fulfillment of the
roles priest, prophet and king, that means all who have been baptized share in His
Person and His work. This three week study will be on Monday evenings March 25,
April 8, and April 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 in the Rectory Meeting Room. No book work
or preregistration required. This is a Lenten opportunity to listen to what Bishop Bar-
ron has to say about Jesus Christ. Participants are welcome to join us on any or all
of these evenings. Consider making this study part of your Lenten pilgrimage even
if you have seen these videos before.
