WELCOME TO THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITIES OF
Deacon Steve Tabor Phone: 503.769.8089
’The power of God is manifested through weakness’’
The first reading today describes the vocation of the prophet Ezekiel.
He was a simple man, like any other common mortal man. What he did was not due to his ability, but to the power of the word of God
that communicated faithfully. The second reading is even clearer: Paul states that the power of God
always manifests itself through weak instruments.
The Gospel shows the reactions of the people of Nazareth because they failed to understand the ways of God, and, therefore, could not
recognize Jesus as the Messiah. The question we all want to know is that: What is the mistake of the
people of Nazareth? To think that God fulfills his plans with instru-ments humans consider indispensable. We are sure that weak means
will bring no or little result and that great feats can be achieved only by great means. But here God springs his surprise: he accomplishes
extraordinary deeds by using what people despise and consider value-less. The villagers of Nazareth see their religious convictions shaken,
but instead of changing their way of thinking, they hold on even more stubbornly to their own ideas and refuse to listen to the one who is
sent to save them. The mistake made by the people of Nazareth could be repeated also by our communities. Don’t we all find it hard some-
times to accept Jesus as he is, without strength and power? Because he never imposes his salvation, he offers it. To receive it, we must
have faith in him; we must believe that the power and victory of God come to us through weakness and defeat. If we do not trust this
premise; if we prefer to adopt human ways of thinking, then, as hap-
pened two thousand years ago, Jesus will be unable to work any won-der or prodigy among us; he will not be able to communicate his
power of salvation.
