St. Joseph Parish The Vigil October 4th, 2020
MARCings
Over eight hundred years ago, a man named John was born, and he was called by his nickname, the Frenchman. He lived in Assisi the son of a very rich shopkeeper, who want-ed him to take up the business. Francis did everything he could to avoid that. He tried being a minstrel, playing music under the windows of beautiful women . That didn't work. He tried becoming a soldier. He still felt trapped, even though he was no longer in the store. He continued to exclude espe-cially the poor and the sick, the lepers. Like many searchers, he turned to the gospel of Jesus. He began to read there about the example of Jesus, and he realized that he was not living it at all, and neither were many others. One day, while walking in the woods, he met a leper, hiding behind a tree. The leper surprised him by putting his hand out, and asking for alms. He stopped, got down from his horse, and he went to the leper and em-braced him. He was free. And he began to see the world in a new way. An old aban-doned church was not just another old church, it became an opportunity to build a new church, to rebuild what had fallen to the ground. As he built with cement, bricks, stones, nails and sand, he saw the Church anew, not only as a building, but also as a people. He saw not only that the church buildings had been falling to pieces, he was that the Church itself had been falling apart, the community of the followers of Jesus Christ. He returned once more to the gospel to find out what to do. He read the story of the rich young man who sold all he had to follow
Jesus. Francis was a rich young man, so that's what he did. But his parents did not agree, the bishop did not agree, even the Pope did not agree. He didn't care because he saw the world differently, like a vineyard, a place where if the kingdom can live in us, the field can bear much fruit, and bring forth new life and growth and good things: a harvest of justice. Where is our vineyard? Where does God in-vite us to walk and to find him waiting for us with good things, with life-giving things. Here in this parish, we are a vineyard, growing together, nurturing each other, doing our best, to see that God's will is done. This week we will gather to honor Francis memory by blessing animals. When Pope Francis was elected a fellow cardinal and a good friend whispered to him upon his election in the Sistine Chapel “remember the poor!” As a result, Jorge Bergolio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aries knew the name he would take as Pope. Perhaps you might also pray a rosary for the Holy Father who is the first to take this Saint’s name. ( and hopefully not the last!) St. Francis, pray for us!

Cardinal soccer and volleyball had a very successful week. The soccer team controlled their game vs. Trini-ty and rolled to a 5-2 win. Cardinal volleyball opened up at home with two teams playing St. Pius. Both the JV and Varsity #1 defeated the Pirates 2 sets to 0. With the compressed schedule, the Cardinals all have a big week ahead with 2 soccer games and 5 volleyball matches at home. Present regulations prevent us from offering general admission to all sporting events. Spectators are limited to 2 guests per player or coach. But you can still see our home games by following us on Facebook. The athletic club has its own Facebook page: St. Joseph Athletic Club Trenton. We will be live streaming our home volleyball games and our next home games will start on Friday, October 9 at 6:00 pm and then on Saturday, October 10 at 10 am. You can also access our schedules on the athletics website: www.sjcardinals.com. Basketball season will be pushed back this year - practices will not start until November 16. More infor-mation regarding registrations will be coming in the next two weeks Tim Mullahy, Athletic Director 734-507-0521
The third graders have been working very hard since the first day of school. They are getting familiar with the daily procedures and are now working independently. They are extremely excited to be back at school, and learning some new concepts. In science, we are learning about the different states of matter. Also, we are learning about what solutions and mixtures are. We will be looking at plain water and water with salt in it and some students will pick one cup and taste it.
We had our school pictures taken and all the students dressed up for the occasion. Can’t wait until what their picture looks like.
God Bless,
Mrs. Kelley and the 3rd Grade Class
