St. Paul counsels us to not be overcome by evil but to overcome evil by good. Please pray for the
peace that we desire and the healing of all that divides us:
Prayer for the beginning of the Civil Year
Almighty God, with you there is no beginning and no end for you are the origin and goal for all creation. May this new year which we dedicate to you bring us abundant prosperity and growth and holy living. We ask this through our Lord
Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen
From: The Roman Missal
Feast of the Holy Family The Sunday within the octave of
Christmas is the Feast of the Holy
Family
and as a day for the restoration of the
true spirit of family life.
The day gives Christian parents an
opportunity to pray that their family life
may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Family life becomes sanctified when parents carry out St. John
Chrysostom's plea to make each home a family church.
Christ could have come to earth in any number of ways, yet God
chose to send His Son as a Child born into a family. In so doing,
He set the Holy Family as an example for us all, and made the
Christian family more than a natural institution.
n this prayer, we ask God to keep the example of the Holy Family
always before us, so that we will imitate them in our family life.
In Honor of the Holy Family
O God, Heavenly Father, it was part of Thine eternal decree that
Thine only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human
race, should form a holy family with Mary, His blessed mother,
and His foster father, Saint Joseph. In Nazareth, home life was
sanctified, and a perfect example was given to every Christian
family. Grant, we beseech Thee, that we may fully comprehend
and faithfully imitate the virtues of the Holy Family so that we
may be united with them one day in their heavenly glory. Through
the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
January 1st Octave of the Nativity of the Lord
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God
“He was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he
was conceived in the womb.” (Luke 2:16-21)
The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God is a liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary honoring her divine motherhood to Jesus Christ.[ It is celebrated by
the Catholic Church on 1 January, the Octave (8th) day of theChristmas season. For Roman Catholics, this day is
designated as a Holy Day of Obligation.
The feast is a celebration of Mary's motherhood of Jesus. The title “Mother of God” is a western derivation from
the Greek: Theotokos, the God-bearer.
The term was adopted at the First Council of
Ephesus as a way to assert the Divinity of Christ, from which it
follows that what is predicated of Christ is predicated of God.
So, if Mary is the mother of Jesus, she is the Mother of God. Therefore, the title “Mother of God” and the “Solemnity of
Mary, Mother of God”, which celebrates her under this title, are at once both Mariological and Christological.
We sincerely thank all of you who have generously contributed to our Christmas collection. This Christmas collection , as
you know, is to help the many Oblates who have grown old or sick in the Lord’s
service.

Gospel - Luke 2:41-52 Christ the Lord
At the age of twelve Jewish boys took their place in their community as young men. Up till then, they were not strictly under the law, but upon coming of age, they were expected to carry their
own weight religiously and begin to do so socially and economically. Thus this trip to Jerusalem for the Passover was probably Jesus’ first; previously he would have stayed at home
with the other young children. Certainly the throngs of pilgrims, the glory of the big city, and the pageantry of the religious ritual
fascinated him (especially because of his unique mission and identity), inducing him to stay behind when the caravan from
Nazareth headed home - the women traveling ahead of the men, which is why Joseph probably thought Jesus was with Mary, and
vice versa.

564 By his obedience to Mary and Joseph, as well as by his humble work during the long years in Nazareth, Jesus gives us the example of holiness in the daily life of family and work.
565 From the beginning of his public life, at his baptism, Jesus is the "Servant", wholly consecrated to the redemptive work that he
will accomplish by the "baptism" of his Passion.

Hunger Does Not Take a Vacation
The Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities Food Pantry continues to assist all of us in fulfilling the gospel
mandate to feed the hungry (see Matthew 25). The pantry provides food to approximately 600 needy individuals and families each and every month. To fulfill this ministry that so many people count on,
the MVCC Food Pantry needs our help and participation. Please pray for the poor and hungry in our midst and consider the following
actions:
Place any of these items in the food collection baskets in our lobby: Peanut Butter, Jelly, Pasta, canned goods, such as:
Soup, Tuna, Sauce, Fruits and Vegetables.
Become a pantry volunteer. There are a variety of ways you can help. Call the pantry at 978-454-9946 for more information or to sign up.
New Year Blessing Lord, as a new year begins, we come to You and ask for Your blessing. We pray that You would give us joy to fill our days, Peace to fill our hearts, and Love to fill our lives. Thank you for the plans You have for us in this new year. We wait in anticipation to see all You will do!
Thanking God for You and praying Your new year is blessed in every way. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Feast of the Holy Family In the last year, there have been stories about families who have survived tragedy, accomplished great things, or completed incredible goals. The one common factor among them all is love. What brings them together, what keeps them together, and what makes them a family is the love they have for one another. Through difficulties and triumphs, in strength and in weakness, love brings out the best in everyone, making life and dreams a reality. The Holy Family is a model of virtue and grace. In spite of some rocky moments and difficult circumstances, Joseph, Mary and Jesus persisted in their love for one another. We get glimpses of this in the Gospels, especially in the public ministry when Jesus shows His love and respect for Mary. These moments of affection and concern are the hallmarks of strong family ties. St. Paul describes the virtues that nurture the bonds of family life. Respect, forgiveness, humility, mercy and love form the core of our relationships with those we love and contribute to a better community. Practice these virtues well. Teach them by example. The power of these gifts will make your family, your church and your community holy.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is
Prayed Monday through Saturday at
the Shrine
at 3 pm, the hour of mercy.
Feast of the Holy Family
A parenting seminar at our parish featured a segment on faith development in children. Time and again, the speaker stressed the importance of the family in teaching children about the meaning and purpose of religious doctrine and practices. If children do not see it at home, they won’t see it—or believe it—anywhere else. Religion is taught, but faith is caught. We cannot overestimate how important a role the family plays in teaching the basics of faith. Children practice what they see. How many two year olds try to make the Sign of the Cross as the family prays before meals? It is comical at times, but a clear reminder that what a child sees and does in the home forms the basis of his or her own practice of faith. Values, morals, and faith all begin at home, so that what the family teaches, the Church preaches and the child of God reaches. Make room for faith and time for its practice. In busy schedules, rushed evenings, and overscheduled weekends, we need the time and space to be quiet, to listen, to pray and to worship. Prayer, bible reading, traditional devotions, Mass, and discussions about spiritual and moral issues will make a big difference in the way the whole family sees, understands and practices faith.

Votive Candles Thanks to all who practice lighting votive candles for their prayer intentions at the
Shrine. These lit candles are lights of faith proclaiming trust in God to care for us and our loved ones in need. How beautiful it is to see faith and love proclaimed by the lit
candle(s) that remain after your visits.
Gift Cards Gift cards are available in the Shrine

“Evangelization must be the first focus of our Church. Then, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, which result from living and sharing the Gospel, will transform the culture around us. We have the mission ‘to repair the world,’ what the Jews call Tikkun olam.”
