DONATION BOXES IN THE CHURCH
For your convenience, collection boxes for Our
Father’s Table and the St. Matthias St. Vincent DePaul
Society are installed by the church’s main entrance. These
collection boxes are secured to the wall and are checked
regularly. If you prefer to place a donation in the offertory
baskets, please feel free to use the purple Second
Collection envelopes found in the pews and indicate which
ministry the donation is for. Please note St. Vincent
DePaul envelopes can be found at the church entrances.
FROM FR. FRAN
The Feast of the Transfiguration
This weekend we have one of those
rare occasions when a feast day falls
on a Sunday in Ordinary Time. The
Feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus
commemorates a pivotal moment in
his ministry when he is glimpsed in
his glory, conversing with two of the great prophets,
while standing on a “high mountain” which
symbolizes the place where God and humanity meet.
Amazed at all of this, Peter suggests that they build
some “booths” and stay awhile. The “booths” Peter
wants to build are part of a custom at the beginning of
the harvest season, where structures, made out of
green branches and decorated with fruits and flowers,
were constructed to symbolize the bounty of God’s
creation. On that mountain top Jesus’ transfiguration
symbolizes that the fruits of God’s creation lie within
his mission.
It’s no wonder then, that the church in the northern
hemisphere decided to celebrate the Feast of the
Transfiguration in the middle of the summer when so
many fruits and vegetables are coming into harvest.
The bounty of our farms and backyards becomes a
symbol of God’s bounty in creation.
It is tradition in Rome to bless the grape harvest on
this day and to use the new wine at mass. In the
Eastern Church there is a tradition of holding a
beginning of harvest festival to celebrate the seeds of
spring being “transfigured” into summertime fruit and
grain.
In our neck of the woods the first tomatoes are
coming in and every farmers’ market is brimming with
local produce. Berries, corn, watermelon, you name it,
all the tastes of summer are spread before us. Perhaps
as we enjoy this bounty we can reflect on our
connection with God’s harvest and Christ’s
Transfiguration. We don’t need to go up on a high
mountain to encounter God, we have Christ in the
Eucharist and in each other.

SPECIAL COLLECTION
CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS
This week’s second collection supports the Catholic
Communication Campaign (CCC). If Jesus Christ were on
earth today, how would he spread his message of salvation?
Wouldn’t he use all communication vehicles to share the
Good News? The CCC believes Jesus would use as many
means as possible, and that is why it supports projects that
use the entire array of media tools available today to
evangelize and promote Gospel values. Please visit
www.usccb.org/catholic-giving/opportunities-for-giving/
catholic-communication-campaign/index.cfm for more
information. Just to note, 50% of the collection remains at
the parish to promote local communication efforts, such as
website technology and bulletins.
In the pews are purple Second Collection envelopes. Please
feel free to use these envelopes as needed to donate to any
special or second collection. St Vincent DePaul donation
envelopes are available at the church entrances.
