Scout Sunday Observance
The twelfth point of the Scout Law is: A Scout is Reverent. Many Troops are
chartered by churches, and as such are part of the church's mission field. The Boy
Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting
Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the
contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. On Sunday, February 10,
Boy Scout Troop 850, charted by St. Philip, will assist with morning worship.
St. Philip and Church of the Messiah will deliver Mobile Meals to local clients the week of February 18—22. If you are available and able to help, please contact Audrey McVean to let her know, 843-497-7190.
Thanks to the Fellowship Committee for organizing a Holiday Brunch on Sunday, January 20.
St. Philip and Church of the Messiah worshipped together, then enjoyed good food and conversation together in the Fellowship Hall.
TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY
See the PASSION PLAY AT OBERAMMERGAU and Splendors of Italy, Germany, and Switzerland
Beth and Randy Neubauer, retired Lutheran pastors now residing in Myrtle Beach, will host a twelve day “Splendors of Italy and Switzerland” group tour in September 2020. The tour joins the historic Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany, with visits to Rome, including the Colosseum and ancient ruins as well as the Vatican and Sistine Chapel; Assisi, home to St. Francis; Florence, jewel of Renaissance Art; Venice, city of canals; Munich, home to Oktoberfest; and Lucerne, one of Switzerland’s prettiest medieval cities. The tour price of $4,499 includes local guides, hotel accommodations, many meals, first class tickets to the Passion Play, the roundtrip flight from Washington, DC, and the chartered bus transportation to carry our group from city to city through scenic Italy and the Alpine region.
Nawas International Travel has arranged group tours for Christians for nearly 70 years and the Neubauer’s have hosted more than a dozen of their tours to Europe and the Holy Lands. Participants have been pleased both with the value and quality of each. This promises to be one of Nawas most popular itineraries due to the renowned Passion Play that has been presented by the villagers of Oberammergau every ten years since 1634. Because tickets sell out in advance, early reservations for this tour are necessary. If interested, a small deposit will hold your place. Brochures are available on the information table at St. Philip, and by contacting Beth Neubauer, 571-344-9794 or beth.neubauer@gmail.com.

WELCA (Women of the ELCA)
A joint meeting of the Esther and Ruth WELCA
Circles was held at St. Philip on Saturday,
January 12. The leaders of each circle and the
officers were recognized and thanked for their
service and dedication.
We heard part of an article written by Meghan
Johnston Aelabouni, “Café” regarding God never
intended for us to “be perfect” but instead to trust
Him to be who we truly are. We heard from two
guest speakers: Bevelyn W. Mitchell, MSHS,
Rape Crisis Center about Human Trafficking,
which is happening now; and from Meghan
Roberts, Director of The Homeless Period
Project (HPP).
We will be helping the HPP each month by
putting together “kits” for Meghan to pick-up
and distribute where needed. Both speakers
were fantastic and all those in attendance
learned so much.
WELCA will be participating in Bold Women’s
Day on February 24, so look for those details.
The state-wide WELCA convention is scheduled
for June 7 and 8 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Lexington, SC.
The convention project this year is “Freedom Bags” and items will be collected leading up to the
convention – a list will be on the table in the narthex or you can see Paulette Miller of items that can
be donated.
Esther Circle will meet on Thursday, February 7 at 10:00 a.m. Ruth Circle will meet on Monday,
February 11 at 5:30 p.m. Both groups meet in the Conference Room.
Shanna Cisson, WELCA President
Celebrate the bold women in your life.
Bold Women’s Day, observed annually on the last Sunday of February,
celebrates all Lutheran women who have acted or are acting boldly on
their faith in Jesus Christ. Some women are bold in their unceasing
prayers. Other women are bold in their service to those in need. Still
other women are bold in their advocacy or through their hospitality.
Whether we live out our bold story of faith in the workplace, family home
or community, our faith compels us to make a difference in the lives of
others. It’s all about living out our baptismal call, about being a disciple of
Christ. Are you bold?
Men’s Breakfast
Men’s Breakfast will meet on Saturday, February 9 at 8:30 a.m. in the Fellow-
ship Hall. Please sign-up on the back of the attendance insert in your Sunday
bulletin or at the information table at church. You may also email or call the
Church Office and your name will be added to the list. Invite a friend with you
and we look forward to a great time of fellowship!
Wednesday Night Small Group
Our Wednesday night Small Group meets weekly at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Room. We are
discussing the book, “What Is the Bible?” by Rob Bell. The book provides surprising insights and
answers about how the Bible actually works as a source of faith and guidance, showcasing a new
way of reading this sacred text. Bell takes us deep into actual passages, revealing not only the
humanity behind the scriptures but the revelation that one cannot get to the holy without going
through the human. “What Is the Bible?” recaptures this ancient library’s subversive energy and
reaffirms its enduring ability to inspire and shape our lives today.
Property Committee – Dave Ramsey
Prepared classroom/conference room for Peachtree Electrical to relocate HVAC wiring (Peachtree completed work 1/2/19).
Took delivery of Fellowship Hall ceiling tiles (ceiling tiles have been replaced in Fellowship Hall). Relocated Bell Tower chime controls to Fellowship Hall closet. Coordinated with Monarch to have Bell Tower repair work completed in conjunction with flat roof
replacement (materials delivered 12/27/18). Cleaned mold from the pre-school entrance door. Flat roof replacement project is progressing well; remaining work is gutter installation, Bell Tower
repair, and regrading parking lot.
Thank you to the following people who helped take down the Christmas decorations and clean the sanctuary: John and Elsie Angus, Gail Kane, Dick and Linda Albert, Neil Nelson, Inara Keelin, Carol Washington, Dave Ramsey, Elise Guenther, Joan DiLorenzo, Dave and Lottie Witmer, Ed Walder, and Marty Poloni. Many hands make light work!
Fellowship Committee
Happy Valentine's Day!
A big thank you to all who helped make the combined Holiday Brunch another memorable occasion for both St. Philip and Church of the Messiah. Such a joy and blessing to have this time of fellowship together and all the great food!
Please join us after worship on February 3 in the Fellowship Hall following
worship for a time of fellowship, coffee, and a sweet treat.

Financial Update from the Finance Team
Online Giving with Tithe.ly
In March 2018, St. Philip began offering online giving using Tithe.ly, an online giving option for ELCA congregations. You can use online giving for your weekly offering, your benevolence offering, to pay for altar flowers, preschool tuition, etc. Basically, anything that you would write a check for in the past, you can now do using online giving. The main benefit is that you no longer need to write that weekly or monthly check. If you set up recurring giving and are unable to make it to church due to being on vacation or illness, your offering will be made.
There are several ways you can give using Tithe.ly. You have no doubt seen the “QR Code” on the Welcome Cards in the pews. And when you sign on to the St. Philip website, you will see the “Give to St. Philip” link in red. Finally, you can get the APP from your mobile phone. Regardless of how you select to use online giving, Tithe.ly makes it very simple to set up. Pictured is a snapshot of the form to be completed.
First, you must decide if you want to give using MasterCard, VISA, or your bank account (note the two circles). If you select MasterCard or VISA, the fees involved are a 25-cent transaction fee and 2.4% of the amount of your offering. For example, with a $50 offering, the fee would be $1.45 cents. If you select to use your bank account, the fees involved are again the 25-cent transaction fee and .5% of the amount of your offering. Therefore, using the same $50 offering as an example, the fee would be $.50. Obviously, the choice is yours whether to use MasterCard, VISA, or your bank account. You can also select to cover those fees so that St. Philip receives the entire $50 offering, meaning your total offering would be $56.45 using a Master-Card, or VISA. It would be $50.50 using your bank account. After selecting MasterCard, VISA, or your bank account, filling out the form is self-explanatory.
One of the major concerns with online giving is security. When we posed this question to our Tithe.ly representative, we were told the odds of cyber hacking are minuscule but certainly not impossible. However, Tithe.ly’s security is on par with leading financial services and banking institutions, such as Amazon, Salesforce, and Google. If you decide you would like to try online giving and you would like some assistance setting it up, please contact Gail Kane, Linda Albert, or Pastor Jason.

The idea for Souper Bowl of Caring begun in South Carolina in 1990 by a seminary intern serving the Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia. Super Bowl weekend was chosen to bring people together for football, fun and to unify the nation for a higher good. A collection of dollars and food were taken to support people in need to better their lives. Since then, more than $90 million has been raised for soup kitchens, food banks, and other charities in communities across the country.
You are encouraged to bring nonperishable food to church on February 3, to be given to Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach. Soup pots will be available for your monetary donations for the team you will be cheering on to victory. Monies collected will also be given to Helping Hand.
