Project Scope
The structural modelization of the existing
bridge included the preparation of Finite
Element Analysis models to evaluate force
effects on bridge components, specifically, the
new cap beam and connection plates at both
bents, bent 25W and 26W.
I-10 WB Over Julia St. Girder Rehabilitation
Eigenvalue Buckling Analysis was used to
evaluate the girder stability during erection.
The analysis produces load factors
equivalent to the Eigenvalues. The load
factors are values by which the applied loads
are factored to cause buckling in the model.

Lessons Learned
1. Modification to the Department Specifications for Disc Bearing are
needed. The Department will specify long-term deterioration tests on
full size disc bearings, rather than disc bearing components.
2. Preferred practice for steel bridges is to use girder proportions that
are conservative with respect to the American Association of State
Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) minimum
requirements.
3. The least understood behavior is the early stages of bridge
construction when the girders are being erected.
