STEINECKER Variomill and Powermill Flexibility for milling
2 |STEINECKER Variomill and Powermill
High beer quality and efficient processes perfectly prepared during milling
Milling with the Variomill and Powermill technology provides excellent grist results from malt and raw grain. This means a top level extract yield and perfect lautering results. The Variomill family with its two-roller models V5, V10, V16, V20 and the four-roller model V25, covers a performance range suitable for small up to industrial breweries. The Powermill with its extra large roller diameter for a maximum grist milling rate complements the program. At a glance − Exact control of a grist milling rate for a constant mash
quality − Variable adjustment of the steeping water temperature
and quantity, the steeping time and the milling gap − Model variants with an output of 5 tons per hour up to
40 tons per hour

Method of operation
− The malt hopper receives the weighed grist for a brew. Optionally, the malt hopper can be put on load cells.
− In the steeping chamber, hot water is added for conditioning. The grade of steeping can be influenced by controlling the water temperature and water quantity as well as the duration of action.
− The crushing rollers crush the conditioned malt using a software-supported milling rate control.
− In the mash chamber, the grist is mixed with brewing liquor to obtain mash. This completely prevents formation of dust.

− In addition to water temperature and quantity, the duration of action is the main factor used for conditioning control.
− If the milling rate is specified, the duration of action will depend on the malt level in the steeping chamber. If the level is higher, the duration of action will be longer than for a lower level.
− Feed roller 1 controls the level of the malt in the steeping chamber.
− Feed roller 2 controls the milling rate depending on the power consumption of the crushing rollers.

Assemblies in detail – milling rate control system
The constant milling process results in a homogeneous mash quality and, at the same time, ensures an optimum roller service life. − The feed characteristics of malt and other raw materials
vary in their quality. For a constant milling rate, the supply of the grist must be controlled.
− During the milling process, the motor output of the crushing rollers is the measurand for the milling rate.
− The feed roller controls the feed according to the measured motor output.
− After milling has been finished, the achieved rate is measured and the rated motor output is recalculated for the following milling process.

Variomill − The milling gap can be automatically adjusted within a range of
0.2 – 1.2 mm to exactly suit the different raw materials, such as barley malt, wheat malt or raw grain.
− Temporary adjustment of the crushing rollers' wear is quickly performed by reducing the milling gap.
− No production stop is required for adjusting the milling gap.
Powermill − The Powermill is equipped with the largest rollers of this mill
class, with a length of 2,000 mm and a diameter of 510 mm. − A large roller diameter D allows a longer contact time T of the
grist between the crushing rollers. − The length of the rollers provide a large passage area and
ensure the efficient infeed of the grist. − This provides an optimum milling result and the best possible
roller service life.

Assemblies in detail – mash chamber
A straightforward and efficient plant technology ensures top mash quality and dust-free mash production. − The grist is mixed with the brewing liquor directly below
the crushing rollers. − As a result, oxygen absorption is low and oxidation
processes in the mash are reduced. − The mash pump with inducer prevents the formation of
lumps and guarantees conveyance with low shear forces.

Your benefits in figures
Using the Variomill or Powermill technology − can increase productivity as the specific false bottom load
in the lauter tun can be increased for conditioned malt. A higher number of brews, stronger worts or larger brews can be achieved.
− can counteract a fluctuating raw material quality by means of the degree of steeping and the milling gap (only on Variomill).

Benefits to you
High yield The adjustment of steeping times and temperatures ensure optimum conditioning of the grist. This is the basis for excellent lautering results and speeds. Optimal for high-gravity processes Higher loading of the lauter tun is possible as compared to dry milling. Hygienic design The Varomill and Powermill grist mills are completely suitable for CIP, cleaning being performed with hot caustic only. No dust during milling The grist mill design does not require any precautions outside the guards, as the mash is directly produced within the mill.
