FIRST ANNUAL EDITION
Honoring those that served their country in uniform and continue to serve Eastern North Carolina!
2 SPECIAL EDITION | HEROES AT HOME STILL SERVING AWARDS
Sometimes life gives you an opportunity to rise above the norm and do something worthwhile. As home to many Marines, sailors and veterans, Eastern North Carolina is full of stories of heroics,
sacrifice and above all, service. It was through one of these stories that the idea for Still Serving was born.
I am Jim Connors, proud civilian publisher of The Globe and RotoVue newspapers serving our service members aboard Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station. Landmark Media has had the honor of producing quality publications for military installations communities since 2002.
A few months ago, after receiving an e-mail praising a veteran for his works in the community, my eyes were opened to the spirit of service military retirees and former military members continue to foster long after they take off the uniform.
They have served our country and are still serving our region by making significant contributions to the Onslow County military community through their work and philanthropic efforts.
Still Serving is a small way for us to honor them and to celebrate the service and achievements of these dedicated individuals.
I’d like to thank our presenting sponsor, Stevenson Auto Group, and our Gold and Silver Sponsors, R.A. Jeffreys Distributing through Anheuser Busch Here’s to the Heroes and Atlantic Marine Corps Com-munities, respectively, for their contributions to Still Serving. I also appreciate emcee Rodney Kemp and guest singer Valerie Morales for joining us for the ceremony.
I extend a warm welcome to our keynote speaker, (Retired) Maj. Gen. Robert Dickerson, and thank him for taking the time to be a part of this occasion.
To all of the nominees, thank you for your service to your country and your community. It is my honor to spotlight so many who gave and who continue to give so much for us all. Congratulations.

ROBERT C. DICKERSON
Just because you’re no
longer active-duty doesn’t
mean you stop working.
Maj. Gen. Robert Dickerson hasn’t taken retirement laying down.
In fact, after 36 years of service to the United States Marine Corps, he’s busier than ever. While holding seats on seven different boards of directors, advising with three different consulting firms and serving on the North Caro-lina Military Council for the governor, keeps his plate full, it’s his community involvement, along with his wife, with the children of Hope for the Warriors that he is the most passionate.
“We’re going to be involved for as long as we possibly can,” he said.
As the keynote speaker for the first ever Still Serving event in Onslow County, Dickerson is humbled by the company of nominees to whom he will be addressing.
“It’s irrelevant who wins,” he notes. “These people don’t do what they do for recognition.”
Dickerson recognizes the booming retiree population of Onslow County and is proud of the work veterans are putting forth in the community.
“There are a lot of veterans out there working
across the board,” he said. “Although they’re not wearing the cloth of the nation any more, they’re still taking care of active-duty military by being involved in the community.”
Dickerson appreciates the work volunteer veterans put into mentoring the younger service members and their families and the example they are setting for future generations.
“We’ve all been there, needing guidance and advice,” he explained. “Just because you retire doesn’t mean you lose the fire in your gut to take care of the younger ones.”
Though he and the group of nominees no longer wear the uniform, the passion for their community and their commitment to serving and taking care of it has increased.
“Just because you’re no longer active-duty, doesn’t mean you stop working,” he encouraged. “They’re engaged because they love the people. (Still Serving) recognizes the volunteers and veterans who continue to give back.”
Dickerson is proud to be a part of the event and extends his congratulations to all of the nominees.
Never lose the passion
