Stonyhurst College Co-curricular
Easter Term 2015
2 | P a g e
“Developing the whole person”
“Leadership and service in the Jesuit tradition”
What is the co-curricular?
(1) Sport
(2) Music
(3) Chaplaincy/Service
(4) Visual & Expressive Arts (e.g. drama, ballet, art)
(5) CCF
(6) Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE)
(7) Clubs & Societies (Activities)
(8) Interline Competitions
(9) Events & Speakers
(10) Trips and Visits
Some co-curricular options are already timetabled for you (e.g. Sport), and some have probably already been arranged (e.g. instrumental music tuition).
3 | P a g e
What do I have to do?
1. Look at the following daily lists. Choose what's right for you. Choose at least two options, in addition to your Games options. Discuss your choices with your Tutor. “Academic Clinics” do not count. They are listed to help you plan your co-curricular options.
Bear in mind your academic commitments, but try to get involved in as much as you can ("quant je puis") - and enjoy!
2. Tell your Tutor which co-curricular activities you have chosen for this term. Your Tutor will enter this information onto a database (SIMS), which will be the official record of your co-curricular commitments for this term. Turn up at the time and place given. In some cases, but not all, a register will be taken. (Please do not say you are doing something if you are not - your absence will be obvious.)
4 | P a g e
How is Stonyhurst’s approach to the co-curricular “different”?
As part of the Stonyhurst Learner Profile (SLP), we ask you – with your Tutor - to reflect on how you have grown through your co-curricular involvement. St Ignatius is the inspiration for this process of reflection. Where, in your co-curricular experiences, are the traces of God’s presence?
More important than what you do, is how you have grown as a person – intellectually, culturally, emotionally, spiritually, etc. – from doing what you have done.
What new skills have you acquired? What are your future goals, and how will you achieve them? What help or support do you need?
P. Ellis, Jan., 2015

Reflecting…
As the weeks roll by, your Tutor will ask you to consider ALL your co-curricular commitments over the course of this term. Using the template below, consider and discuss your experiences with your Tutor. How – and how well - have your co-curricular experiences developed you as a person? What more can you do? How?
EXAMPLE Evidence? Your strengths /areas for improvement?
Goals?
New challenge(s)? e.g. SCUBA Good knowledge as
tested. Need to
improve buoyancy.
Open Water
dive
Working with others?
e.g. DofE

More

Developing leadership skills?
e.g. DofE

improve Map-
reading skills
Gold!
Service: College, local, global?
e.g. FTDJ
Could learn more
about Fair Trade

from Miss
Young
Significant perseverance and commitment?
e.g. rugby Speed, but need to
improve ball-
handling skills
Practise this

Learning new skills/new levels of excellence?
e.g. Acting Confident, but
need to learn lines
better
Convincing
performance

Choosing and organising your options NB Academic Clinics begin with a “!” and are placed in a box. They are listed to help you plan your co-curricular options. Academic Clinics do not count as co-curricular options; they may, however, offer academic enrichment beyond the syllabus. Subject-based options that are purely “academic enrichment” do not have a “!” (e. g. Chemical Society). These do count as co-curricular options.
