THE ATMOSPHERE
When you look–up in thesky you will see a vast spacewhich is a thousand milesfarther from you. It iswhat we all call the atmos-phere.
In this Strategic Inter-vention Material you willknow details about theEARTH’s ATMOSPHERE.
Have fun while readingand learning!

THE ATMOSPHERE
This Strategic Inter-
vention Material (SIM) helpsyou to know about:
What is a atmosphere?
What are the parts of
the atmosphere?

THE ATMOSPHERE
ORIGIN OF
THE WORD
ATMOS-
PHRE
It is from the
Greek word,
ατμόσφαιρα:
atmos, meaning
'vapor' and
sphera, meaning
'globe.'
Atmosphere is the mixture of gases surround-
ing a celestial body with suficient gravity to main-tain it. Although some details about the atmos-
pheres of other planets and satellites are known,
only the earth's atmosphere has been well studied,
the science of which it is concerned called meteor-
ology.
The
atmosphere
is composed
of several
gases this

THE ATMOSPHERE
LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE
TROPOSPHERE— extends between 9 kmat the poles and 17 km at the equator . Thislower part of the atmosphere is responsiblefor our weather.
STRATOSPHERE— it extends up to 50 kmabove the earth’s surface. It is where theozone layer is located and it is a place where
most aerial vehicle flies to avoid weatherdisturbances on the troposphere,
MESOSPHERE—extends from the top ofthe stratosphere to about 80 km, The tem-perature here will drop at the top of it may-be lower than –75 ⁰ c .
THERMOSPHERE—ranges from 80 km to
about 400 km above t earth. In this layertemperature increase rapidly with altitude.Satellites orbits the earth at this height.

THE ATMOSPHERE
IMPORTANCE OF THEATMOSPHERE
The atmosphere protects earth's lifeforms from harmful radiation and cos-mic debris such as the meteors.
It also protects humans from theharmful ultraviolet rays of the sunthrough the ozone layer.
Influences the weather that is con-sists of the day -to-day fluctuations ofenvironmental variables and includesthe motion of wind and formation of
weather systems such as hurricanes.

Directions
Draw a circle on the orange paper that has a radius of 2 cm anda diameter of 4 cm.
Cut out the circle and draw an equator across the middle of thecircle.
Label the orange circle Earth and put an N at the top and S atthe bottom to show the poles.
Draw an oval on the lightest blue paper with your compass. Thewidest part of the oval should have a radius of 4 cm. The nar-rowest part 3 cm.
Trim the oval so the diameter is 8 cm around the equator and 6cm at the poles.
Label the oval the Troposphere. The diameter of the oval variesbetween 6 cm and 8 cm.
Take the next piece of paper and create a larger circle with aradius of 6 cm.
Cut out the circle and label it Stratosphere. The diameter ofthis circle is 12 cm.
The final circle should have a radius of 8.2 cm.
Cut out the circle and label it Mesosphere. The diameter of thiscircle is 16.4 cm.
Label the last square of blue paper Thermosphere.
Glue each of the circles one on top of the other to make thelayers of the atmosphere.
