RECENT GIFTS

n The National Science Foundationrecentlyawardeda$554,248granttostartacomputersciencesummercampfor7thand8thgradegirls.

n Charles Ward,classof1949,establishedascholarshipforundergraduatestudentswithan$812,000gift.

n Jean Jenkinsgave$870,140throughherestateandestablishedanendowedscholarshipinhonorofherlatehusband,Edwin,classof1949.

n Reverend and Mrs. John Whiteneck,longtimefriendsofPacificUniversity,madeaseriesofgiftsthroughtheirestatestotaling$566,000forsupportofPeaceandSocialJusticeStudies.

n The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust awardeda$325,000granttofurtherenhanceanalreadyrobustsummerresearchprograminvolvingstudentsandfacultymentors.ThisinitiativealsoformedthePacificResearchInstituteforScienceandMathematics.

n The National Science Foundation(NSF)awardeda$748,950RobertNoyceScholarshipProgramgranttotheCollegesofEducationandArts&SciencesestablishingascholarshipprogramdirectedathighlyqualifiedandmotivatedscienceandmathprofessionalstopreparethemforK-12STEMteaching.

n Professor David Scholnickhastwicereceivednationalmediaattentionforhisresearch—firstforhissimpleinvestigationontheimpactofbacteriaonshrimpandmorerecentlyforhisexaminationofOregonlizardssickwithmalaria.HisresearchprogramistryingtobetterunderstandthediseaseanditsimpactsonanimalsinNorthAmerica.

n DeanofOptometryJenny SmythewasrecentlyrecognizedastheOregonOptometristoftheYearinadditiontobeingthefirstwomantobenamedtotheAssociationforSchoolsandCollegesofOptometryExecutiveCommittee.

n In2004,Professor Jules Boykoff andhisbrotherMaxwell,performedaresearchstudythatimplicatestheU.S.massmediaforplayingaproblematicroleintheglobalwarmingdiscussion;thisstudyservedasafoundationforAlGore’sbookandfilm,An Inconvenient Truth.

n InternationallyrenownedclinicalpsychologistandAssociateProfessorofProfessionalPsychologyJohanRosqvist,hasappearedonTheLearningChannel’s“Hoarding:BuriedAlive”andDiscoveryHealthChannel’s“Anxious.”

n Internationallyrecognizedlecturer,researcherandAssociateProfessorofOptometryPatrick CarolinehasservedasacontributingeditorofContactLensSpectrumandhasservedontheeditorialboardforContactLensandAnteriorEyeJournalforthepast15years.

Pacific’sCollegeofEducationreceiveda$1milliongrantfromtheBill&MelindaGatesFoundationtoestablishanEarlyLearningCommunity(ELC)withintheCollege.MarkBailey,

ProfessorofEducationandELCdirectorispicturedwithagroupofyoungstudents.

The Challenge AheadTheCampaign for Pacificisaboutcreatingtheacademicandfinancialinfrastructurethatwill

sustainourcorevalueoftransforminglivesandcarryitforward.

Wearecommittedtoprovidingthebest-qualityeducationforourstudents.Thatmeanswe

mustcreateanenvironmentspecificallydesignedfora21stCenturyeducationalenterprise.

Overthelastdecade,PacificUniversityhasseenmorechangethaninitsprevious150-years.

TheUniversity’senrollmenthasincreasedby24percentoverthelastfiveyears.TheCollege

ofArts&Scienceshasgonefrom1,211studentsin2006to1,441in2010.Thegraduate

programshavegonefrom1,233in2006to1,587in2010.ForthefirsttimeintheUniversity’s

history,theundergraduateCollegeofArts&Sciencesenrollednearly500first-yearstudents.

AdramaticincreaseintheUniversity’sinfrastructureusheredinthe21stCenturywithsix

newLEED-certifiedbuildings.ThenewHealthProfessionsCampusinHillsboroalignedthe

University’shealth-relatedprogramswithourmissiontodeliverclinicalcarewhileteaching

studentstobecomepractitioners.ThenewLibrary,intheheartoftheForestGrovecampus,

servesasaresourceforstudents,facultyandthecommunity.Twonewresidencehalls,

BurlinghamandGilbert,werebuilttoincreaseresidentialhousingoptionsforstudentsinthe

undergraduatecollege.BerglundHall,whichhousestheCollegeofEducationandBusiness

Department,hashelpedattractthebestandbrightestfacultyandstudentsintoourprograms.

ThePacificUniversityLibrarywasthefirstLEED-certifiedbuildingontheForestGrovecampus.

learning,internationaleducation,internships,externships,residencies,researchandco-

curricularactivities.Pacificalsoprovidespersonalgrowthanddevelopmentopportunities

forstudentshelpingtocreatelivingtapestriesofunderstandingaboutthemselves,their

disciplinesandtheirworld.

StudentsintheCollegeofArts&Sciencesarepreparedfortherigorsofgraduateor

professionalstudyandthedemandsofemployment.Theyarealsoreadyforthecomplexities

ofathoughtfullifeasaresultofaninnovativecurriculumbasedintheliberalartswhich

embracesthewholeperson.Studentsdiscovermultiplepathwaysbetweencurrentstudies
