The Adriatic-Ionian Macro-Region lies at the basis of the project and influenced
the definition of its objectives
What is a Macro-region?
"Macro-Region is an area including territory from a number of different countries or
regions associated with one or more common features or challenges.” (DG Regional Policy)
What is the Adriatic-Ionian Macro-Region?
The Adriatic-Ionian Macroregion is not a geographical region with predefined boundaries; it
is a functional area, composed of national,
regional, and local bodies coming together to tackle a number of shared issues and it involves territories of EU member states (Italy, Slovenia, Greece and Croatia) and also potential candidate countries (Albania, Bosnia- Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia).

The Adriatic-Ionian Macro-region
The Macro-regional strategy originated from the community according to a bottom-up approach
The entities representing the civil society in the area (Forum of the Adriatic-Ionian Cities, Forum of the Adriatic-Ionian Chambers of Commerce, Network of Universities in the Adriatic-Ionian basin [UNIADRION], Network of Regions and Adriatic and Ionian Initiative) inspired the strategy from its very origin.
Most of SUNBEAM partners (17 out of 20) are also members of
the UNIADRION network
SUNBEAM is strictly connected with the reinforcement and revitalization of the
UNIADRION network
is a «network of universities» established with the purpose to create a permanent connection among Universities and Research Centres from the Adriatic-Ionian area
the network was born within the framework of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative in year 2000
promotes cooperation among Universities and Research Centres mainly through the realization of research and didactic activities, such as training courses, post-lauream courses, research projects
UNIADRION Secretariat is hosted at Università Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona – Italy)
UNIADRION Presidency rotates according to the Presidency of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative
