The Statute of Westminster – 1931
Early in the Great Depression England passed an important law or statute that gave more power and independence to its former colonies, including Canada! The Statute of Westminster passed in 1931 ended England’s control of Canada’s foreign policy : England could no longer tell Canada how to act with other countries!
A good example of Canada controlling its own foreign affairs happened in 1939, when the Second World War started at the end of the Great Depression: Canada declared war on Germany before England did! Today, all Canadians share a proud identity as a country that fought bravely with the Allies in the Second World War (1939 – 1945).
But England still had power over some of our laws until 1982. In that year, England finally surrendered its power to make laws which affected Canada by passing the Canada Act.

Quick and Easy Bread Pudding (for 8X8 pan)
5-6 slices of bread, any type (bran is great)
1 ½ c. milk
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon
4 tbsp.sugar
¼ c. raisins
2 tbsp. butter
Beat together milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar and raisins by hand or mixer. Pour over torn up bread. When bread is completely saturated with mixture, mix and break up bread with fork until bread and mixture are well blended together. Grease pan with butter and pour in mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for45 min or until knife comes out clean. Don’t throw away your stale bread. It’s great for this recipe. Waste not, want not!
Oatmeal Molasses Cookies:
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup shortening
1 egg
½ cup molasses
2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup quick cooking oats
Cream sugar and shortening together in large mixing bowl. Add egg and molasses; beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients and mix well. Add vanilla then stir in oatmeal. Drop from teaspoon onto greased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes, until done.

Polish Sauerkraut Soup (Kapusta)
6 potatoes – cubed
1 jar sauerkraut (15 oz.)
1 large onion – dice and sauté in ¼ cup oil
2 garlic cloves – sauté
2 ribs celery – sauté
½ tsp caraway seed
1 bay leaf
5 peppercorns
1 Tbsp. thyme or rosemary
salt and pepper
1 lb. Polish sausage
5 carrots – diced
3 Tbsp. sugar
3 Tbsp. chicken bullion
3 Tbsp. sour cream (optional)
Cover with water and simmer until potatoes are cooked.
