Search Strategies
A good search strategy can not only improve your results but reduce the amount
of time you spend searching for information.
Combinations of words and phrases
Synonyms: teacher, tutor, lecturer
Differences in spellings: colour, color
Use wildcards (The stem of a word followed by an asterisk): photo* for results on
photograph, photographer, photographic
Always use the Advanced Search facility
Use Boolean Logic (It sounds scary but it just means to combine words and phrases
with AND/OR/NOT)
Mind Mapping
The college has mind mapping software called
Mindview 4. It’s available on all computers at college
and can help you organise your thoughts to help with
your assignments.
You don’t have to be technologically minded to
use mind mapping. You can always just
brainstorm your ideas on a piece of paper.
Great for exam revision and assignment
planning

RSS & Email Alerts
To support your research RSS feeds can be created for your search
queries in many of the databases e.g. EBSCOhost.
These RSS feeds once saved and embedded will check for updates
daily and if new resources appear for your specific search they will
update.
Many institutions/organisations also produce RSS feeds which you
can collect to keep up to date with the very latest information from
the industry.
Sign up for email alerts, just look for Alert/Save/Share

Referencing
You need to be organized with your referencing, every time
you use a resource make a note of it
You’ll be dealing with information from many different sources
– make a careful note of where all your information comes
from as you use it
Remember that the library system doesn’t keep a permanent
record of what you’ve taken out
Always make a note of the date electronic resources are
accessed
The library team can help you with your referencing, but please remember any advice given
should be run by your tutor first before submitting work.
Copies of Cite
Them Right can be
purchased or
borrowed from
