People are using up the Earth’s resources too fast. We can slow this down by recycling. Recycling is the process used to turn used materials into something else. It is very easy to do. Mr. Earth will show you how.

The Earth’s resources are being used too fast. We are using them up. This can become a big problem. Recycling is a way we can fix this. We will begin by learning about recycling.

Many everyday objects can be recycled easily at home. Items that can be recycled usually have the recycling symbol on the bottom.

METALSMost metals are able to be recycled.

Examples: aluminum cans, steel, foil, empty aerosol cans.

The ones that are not recyclable include aerosol cans that are full, paint cans, and other metals with toxins inside.

Glass

Glass objects are also recyclable.

Examples include: glass jars, containers, bottles.

Glass that is not recyclable includes: light bulbs, mirrors, and treated glass. nextback

Now here’s the tricky part. Plastics contain a number on the bottom. That number determines whether or not the plastic can be recycled. The next few slides will

be over each type of plastic.

PET or PETE

-Most commonly used.

-Can be recycled.-Examples: water

bottles, soda bottles, most plastic containers used to

HDPE-Plastic used for many things.

-Can be recycled easily.

-Examples: trash bags,milk jugs,

cleaning product bottles, tubs butter

comes in, cereal box liners,

shampoo and conditioner

V or PC

Tougher plastic.

Not usually recycled. Only certain recycling companies accept them. Make sure you ask your recycling company.

Examples: Siding, medical equipment, piping.

LDPE

Flexible plastic.

Not usually recycled. DO NOT recycle unless you ask your recycling company first.

Examples: Squeezable bottles, shopping bags, tote bags, carpet, furniture, dry cleaning bags. nextback

PP

Used when dealing with hot liquids.

ONLY recycled through certain

companies.

Examples: Straws, syrup bottles,

ketchup bottles, caps. nextback

PS

-Styrofoam or other foam products.

-NOT USUALLY recycled.

Examples: Disposable plates and cups, egg cartons, carry-out containers.

OTHER

This group contains all of the plastics that don’t fit into the before categories.

NOT recycled!

Examples: Sunglasses, nylon, gallon water bottles, cases for iPods. nextback

Plastics can be confusing. If you ever have questions when at

home you can ask your parents. If they are not sure you can call

and ask your local recycling company. If the plastic has a 1 or

2 then it is safe to recycle.
