2013

Nearly 165 million households in America have as pets, a dog or cat, or multiples of each. The most recent tally is 78 million dogs and 86 million cats. That equates to

a staggering $9 billion dollars in pet food sales per year. But that is merely a pittance when compared to the $117 billion Americans spent on fast-food purchases alone, or the $96 billion in beer sold last year.

What this year’s calendar celebrates is the unconditional love and companionship shown by pets in monthly photographs, plus one possum. With submissions from our friends, clients and admirers, we’ve amassed an invaluable and varied collection of photographs of animal pals frolicking, contemplating, relaxing and even doing a bit of work. The avalanche of pictures has resulted in a year’s worth of enjoyment, and we thank all who submitted photographs.

The pleasures and responsibilities of pet ownership are enormous; vet bills and food costs can be a burden. It is important to remember that there are vast numbers of cats and dogs in shelters that long for a loving home. Spaying and neutering your pets–including strays that wander in your yard–help reduce the proliferation of “unwanted” animals. Your local animal shelter is an often too temporary home to many exceptional, loving pets that would help make your house a home. Before going to a pet store to buy a pet, visit a nearby shelter to find a pal in need of a home.

If you think money can't buy happiness, then you’ve never had a dog or cat as a companion.
