NEW DELHI, Aug 19:

After around four years ofJanta Dal United JD(U) comingback into the NationalDemocratic Alliance (NDA)fold, the ruling alliance is just astep away from celebrating itsfiftieth 'landmark' figure.

In the last Lok Sabha elec-tions, NDA the 29 party allianceformed Government at the Centreafter winning with absolutemajority. During the three yearsof its reign, the number of alliancepartners have gone up to 49 withthe addition of 20 new politicalfactions into it.

The news is doing the roundsthat a principal party of UnitedProgressive Alliance too can jointhe bandwagon. Coming intoinception in 1998, the BJP-ledNDA under the leadership of for-

mer Prime Minister Atal BehariVajpayee has 'ruled' the countryfor nine long years and been inOpposition for 10 years in itseventful journey of 19 years.

Shiv Sena and ShiromaniAkali Dal have always beeninseparable parts of the NDAwhile other political partieshave mostly been in and out.JD(U) too was also initially acoalition partner of the alliancebut in 2013 it parted ways.However, now, again, it has offi-cially become its partner.

There were 14 parties in NDAwhen it came into existence in1998 which compounded to 16 in1999 while Telugu Desam partyalways gave outside support to theCentre. But in 2004 Lok Sabhapolls, its size condensed to 12 par-ties whereas in 2009, NDA hadsupport of 13 outfits.

Deprived of a win in 2009general elections, the BharatiyaJanta Party not only workedhard at strengthening partystructure but also worked atstrategy to widen the base ofNDA and studify the alliance.

It contested elections with thesupport of 29 more political partiesin the NDA alliance and on its ownwon ten seats more than absolutemajority at 282 while NDA got336 seats. After becoming BJPpresident, Amit Shah has stuck tothe task of launching a "campaign"to connect the booth level workerswith the party across the countryand simultaneously expanding theNDA reach.(UNI)

''Rashtrapati Bhavan should be accessible toas many people as possible.

Those in Delhi can visit it by themselves, butan updated website and digital presence, in thisera of digital technology and social media, canensure that more and more people in other partsof the country can be part of the Rashtrapati

Bhavan's online community,'' he said.He also emphasised the importance of physical

health and good conduct of officers and staff ofRashtrapati Bhavan. The Press Secretary to thePresident, Ashok Malik introduced the Press Wingof Rashtrapati Bhavan to the President, comprisingDeputy Press Secretary, Shamima Siddiqui,Message Section, Library, Photo Section, MultiMedia Studio, Reference & Clipping Cell and theGovernment of India Printing Press.

Today's meeting was the second in a series ofmeetings that the president has called to acquainthimself with the President's staff.
